Unseasonal weather
« on: July 15, 2015, 02:02:16 AM »
Winters in Far North Queensland tend to be rather gentle affairs. peak temperatures drop to around 25 (C) and minimums to a pleasant 18 ~ 19 (C). Most winters do not require much in the way of blankets and life is pretty pleasant.

This year however we are suffering from a climatic event that has been christened "The Antarctic Vortex" which has seen temperatures struggle to get above  22 ~23 during the day, it was 9 degrees last night and the less said about that the better, three "summer weight" blankets and we were still shivering, eventually we broke out the sleeping bags and slept in those.

Not having wintered in a cold place for a decade or so and then being suddenly faced by cold makes you realize that you have discarded or no longer fit in your winter outfits. This morning I rode the XT to work because my motorcycling jackets are about the warmest jackets I own and I wanted to wear one at work until the air-conditioning warmed the place up, I thought I might look a bit silly in my jacket and boots if I didn't actually have a motorcycle downstairs.

Tonight is going to be a warmer 11 degrees, but according tothe news service there is a second wave coming and we are looking at having at least another week of extraordinary cold. I briefly entertained th enotion of goign downstairs and taking photos of the KLE re-assembled but after poking my nose outside, I changed my mind.

We've been having some very cold weather - not unseasonal, but bloody cold.  A couple of weeks ago a location in the South Island was -21...on the same day it was -19 on the top of Mt Everest. Lowest ever in NZ is -25.  We were -3 and -4 here that week...and I was on holiday, so that was good. Monday was -2....I can ride in that, but took the car.  It's bloody cold on the bike at those temps, but I'm colder at work than on the bike - my feet freeze on the concrete floor, I have to keep putting my hands under the hot tap to thaw them out.

That's really funny Tony.  When I lived a couple of hundred kilometres down the road from you I used to tell people down south that, I knew it was cold when I had to wear a shirt.  Although I knew it was cold there when it reached single figure(s) overnight, like you are experiencing now.

I had heard that NZ was pretty bloody cold at the moment and as long as the Antarctic Vortex disappears before August when I go skiing, I will be happy.

I used to stop riding the bike to work at Ipswich when it dropped below about 12 deg C.  Pretty warm compared to some parts of the world.

Seems I remember the weather-geeks threw that term around in this half of the world last winter.  I also read that some scientists in the UK are predicting another "mini ice-age" in the 2030s.  I remember in the early 70s all of the groups that survive on government handouts to support "iffy" science were predicting we would be entering another ice-age soon...

I think Mother Nature's gonna do what she pleases no matter how much we object!

Bring on the mini ice-age. Just let me find a restorable Kettenkrad first.
Keep your bike in good repair: motorcycle boots are not comfortable for walking.

There is one in running order at the Artillery and Armour museum just 10km from where I live.

They have some amazing stuff The thing about a Kettenkrad is that every day of the week a Jeep was better.

Always wanted to have a shot on a Kettenkrad, but have only ever seen one running once and that was at the Bovington Tank Fest, and the highlight of the day was the museums running Tiger tank.

If you're ever in the UK or a Brit, the Tank Museum at Bovington Camp is a great day out, and close enough to Portsmouth that you're having a long weekend you can tie it in with a trip to the Royal Dock Yard (Mary Rose, HMS Victory & Warrior) and drop in a Loomies Biker Cafe on the A32.

Motorcyclepedia, a motorcycle museum in New York, has a Kettenkrad.  If I recall correctly, its marking are those of the Africa
corps.  I believe that it is operable, although it probably has not been run in a long time.

I never understood how that one little motorcycle tire on the front could possibly steer that thing with the mass and surface area/friction of all that caterpillar tread.   I figured it was mostly for show and just as likely to just push a furrow in the dirt..

I concur Tony, Bovington is an amazing place and that Tiger tank is one scary piece of kit!

Not sure if any of you have watched the movie Fury yet, but the Tiger fight scene just shows the courage (and fear) of the Sherman tank crews and the fact that the Allied fighting kit in many ways was hopelessly outmatched against the Germans (Kettenkrad excepted...)

Having said that, it does look cool!
