Roadkill tally
« on: May 19, 2015, 04:31:55 PM »
Added another notch to my roadkill belt.  I was out riding the other evening and came around a turn where a fluffy little bunny ran out in front of me like he was trying to race a train to a crossing.  He lost and I hit him with the front tire.  Didn't upset the handling too much and by the time I had doubled back the little guy had breathed his last.

I've also rear-ended a honey bee with my sternum while riding the LS.  I got stung and the bee fell down my shirt and squirmed to death in my belly button as I got tangled up in an interstate high speed police chase.

While riding my old Kawasaki a medium sized duck flew out in front of me and I hit him with my shin.  The duck made out alright.

My Miata has claimed an opossum, and my '77 Mercedes 240 Diesel was so slow that it fell victim to a canine his and run.  He ran across 3 lanes into my quarter panel and took off before we could exchange credentials.

We have lots of Deer, Bears and Cougars around here on Vancouver Island.  My wife hit a deer with our Subaru Forrester a few years ago.  The deer jumped out of the forest right in front of her.  Another time I was riding to meet some other riders for breakfast and there was a cougar about 3 blocks from our house.  I passed him at the time I was about 15 feet away from him...thank God he didn't come after me.  Cougars are very dangerous.

Another time I was riding over an old (newly paved) logging road out to the west coast of the Island.  It is a narrow road.  I was riding on my Goldwing and I spotted a Mamma Bear with her cub crossing the road in front of me...about 100 yards away.  The cub ran over to the side of the road and mamma bear stopped in the middle of the road...looking at me.  I figured I could not turn around before the bear would be all over me so I kept going, blowing the horn.  Mamma just stayed there.  Just as I got close she stood up on her hind legs.  I was riding right toward her thinking that she would run across the road but that did not happen.  At the last moment I made a quick movement to the left and passed her before she could attack me.  I thank God that she didn't swipe me with her paw.

Not too much risk from the larger wildlife in the UK although we have sheep wandering across the road sometimes and maybe deer but that would be very rare.

My road kill is limited to insects although the bigger ones are not much fun wearing an open face helmet.

I hit a pheasant yesterday morning riding to work on my 1200. No damage to me other than a on my knee when I got to Blackpool, or the bike but the pheasant did not come off to well... (lots of feathers and a dismantled bird).

Still there was a nice cooked pheasant smell round the bike until I cleaned the debris from the underside of the LHS pot and side stand...

Back when I wuz working out in the boonies and riding to work for 6 years at oh-dark-thirty I've clipped one armadillo and had a skunk run into my back tire.  Sure was glad the skunk didn't hit the front tire!
