Paris considers banning motorcycles >15years old
« on: February 06, 2015, 06:50:07 PM »
So Paris is planning on banning motorcycles older than year 2000 fromthe city, as well as autos older than 1996.   Makes me glad that I don't live there.    The even more disturbing thing in the article is that other EU countries are watching this sort of thing closely.    Maybe we'll be able to import all those old classics over here, like adopting orphans and giving them a welcome home in the US...

Its not so much that Paris wants to ban older cars and bikes, because the French will likely just ignore it, same as they do for other laws they don't think are right.  What really worries me about this is the precedent it will set, because the EU just loves to use the excuse of a precedent to impose legislation with out having to worry about little things like a democratic process. Not that the EU is a democracy as all the executive positions are appointments rather then elective. Hopefully this poorly considered plan will be the stimulus to get the FEMA (Fed of Euro Motorcyclists Associations) to pull their fingers out and get a good lobby going.

As a tourist, Paris is a crazy place to ride a bike or drive a car so I can't imagine it would affect me on holiday even though both my bike and car would be banned. I feel sorry for the French locals though. This is the sort of nonsense that makes me think the UK should  leave the European union.

France has a history of  trying to introduce draconian measures and then coming unstuck. The breathalyser one is beyond belief.

January 2012 - the French government announced that from 1 January 2013 all drivers and passengers of a motorcycle over 125cc or a motor tricycle over 15 KW/h must wear reflective clothing when riding their vehicles.

January 2013 - the French government announced that the law that made reflective equipment compulsory for motorcycle riders and passengers in France from 1 January has been abolished.

1 March 2012 - the French government confirmed that from 1 July 2012 drivers of all motor vehicles and motorcycles (excluding mopeds) must carry a breathalyser. The regulation will be enforced from 1 November 2012 and anyone stopped after that date who fails to produce a breathalyser when requested will receive an on the spot fine of €11.

October 2012 - the French government announced that the implementation of the sanction for drivers not carrying a breathalyser – a fine of €11 – has been postponed from 1 November 2012 to 1 March 2013.

January 2013 - the French government announced that the implementation of the sanction for drivers not carrying a breathalyser – a fine of €11 – has been postponed indefinitely.
