Max BMW - NY

I am considering purchasing a used BMW motorcycle (K 1300 GT) from Max BMW, in New York.  Does anyone know of any particularly good experiences or bad experiences purchasing a used bike from them?

I have very little experience with MAX's New York store except I stop there for coffee usually a few times per year as I am passing through.    MAX is usually a pretty good dealer to work with, at least the NH store that I most often visit and buy numerous parts from.

K1300 GT is a pretty sharp looking bike - good luck with your quest!   Are you planning to keep the R65, or are you going to trade it?

I am keeping the R65.  I love that thing for day trips and light touring.  

I am looking to get a sport touring BMW for a long distance trip next year.  The K 1600 is just too big and heavy for my tastes.  I am not too keen on the R 1200.  I have always liked the K 1300, which is about the heaviest I would want to handle, and which has a ton of power.  Sadly, they discontinued manufacture a few years ago.  So, basically, I am looking at getting a used K 1300 GT, or getting a new K 1300 S and modifying it with respect to saddle bags, handle bars, and foot pegs.  

I am leary of buying a used motorcycle, especially when something like the K 1300 GT costs a much as it does.  I would consider it if Max BMW has a good reputation for standing behind any used bikes they sell.

I ultimately decided not to go with a used K1300GT from Max.  I decided to go new instead.  After a lot of thought and research, I narrowed it down to a K1300S or a R1200RT wethead.  I liked the K1300 power plant and suspension over that on the R1200 wethead, but was concerned about the ergonomics of the K1300S.  After a whole lot of research into possible aftermarket ergonomic improvements if needed, I decided to get the K1300S.  Here is the bike:



It has some features in common with the R65.   One is that it is relatively light weight.  Another is that the seat height is lower than many other BMWs, and that I can stand flat-footed on this bike despite my 29 inch inseam.  It also has good cornering and handling on back roads.  

I will say that the seat is superior to the orginal on the R65.  I had my doubts about the footpeg positioning, but so far it has been comfortable for several hours of riding.  The handlebar position is not bad at first, but after about an hour and half numbness in the hands set in.  As set of riser bars (which I expected to add ever before I bought the bike) should take care of that nicely.  

I am still keeping the R65, for mostly local and regional rides.  The K1300S will see local, regional and long distance riding (including a ride to Santa Fe that I am planning).

Thanks for the congratulations.  The more I get used to the new bike, the more confident I feel and the more I enjoy it.  

Now I just have to finsh the break-in / first service, and do a couple of minor modifications (i.e., riser bars, and maybe pegs) and I will be ready to ride out to Santa Fe this summer.
