Yep, they are trying to distance themselves from the plebs....By inflating their prices to such a degree that only the 'toffs' and film stars can afford them.

Powerful marketing strategy - Nostalgia.  Along with green wellies, tweed and corduroy.

I am not jealous really.....

That video is an accurate depiction of a normal day for us 'brits'... ::)

My dear wife has purchased a Trialmaster for me to go along with the 65 and I look forward to posting pics/video of me looking impossibly handsome and suave as I cruise around Yorkshire on my airhead (need to er, get it finished first... :-[).

There may be some technical issues with the handsome bit, but I do have access to a very good plastic surgeon, so we shall see!

I am sure that you wont even get your collar felt by plod when you are larking around on the main roads, on your way down to Goodwood from the 'old smoke' that Londinium.

In fact plod will probably think, dressed like that, you are probably some magistrates son, on a day trip out with his (worthy) pals from Eton, what!

It is interesting to note that these stylized airheads are getting very popular, and have now started to affect the prices of airheads in general.

All 'old nail' airheads on ebay now come with the great add-on, "ideal project for café racer or bobber" or some such.  And the start price is now £500 more.  And they are selling.

Seems everyone wants a bobber/brat/café racer or whatever.

ho hum.

Well here goes,

Last year whilst at the local dealer I was shown over the latest and greatest R1200GS "Waterbus".  It has this and that and just about everything else in modern technology.  The price was irrelevant to me because WTF, I just want to ride and concentrate on the road.  A lot of the extra stuff is just something else to take your mind off riding.  Part of the enjoyment of riding is being part of the machine and mastering its limitations.

I have not been a member of the local BMW club for quite sometime now, as I forgot to renew my membership.  I had some very good friends whom I did a lot of miles with but the new generation (of professional people) in the club appear to have this attitude of if you don't have this weeks colour/model then we won't talk to you.  There was even a subtle GS clique forming twenty years ago, when I think about it.

Anyway, down here in Oz R65s that come up for sale are starting to ask ridiculous prices.  The cheapest I saw was $3,000 and they are regularly advertised for twice that.  There have been a couple of "cafe'd" ones asking close to $10,000.  Considering my '84 model cost $3,800 new, I am dumbfounded at those prices.  We have a system here called LAMs approved bikes (Learner Approved Motorcycle which means a learner Licence holder is able to ride a bike based on horsepower and not capacity, as it was previously).  The R65 is an approved LAMs bike and the cheeky buggers even advertise cafe'd R65s as LAMs approved.  Possibly the wrong attitude to portray to a Learner rider.

For those prices I would expect an immaculately presented machine.  Even classic models such as R100RS and R100CS start at anywhere between $10 to 15K.  And we are a small market down here compared to UK and US.

Admittedly BMW and Belstaff have had similar images over the years and as a young fellah I would not be seen dead in Belstaff.  However I am a little older now and may have slightly relaxed my views.   :o

Even though modern marketing may not be attractive to me, they do what they do to sell stuff.  As for toffs, arrogance and people who think their pooh don't stink ... well at times I their face and my fist would be a good match.

I must apologise for the rant, and hopefully I have not offended anyone.

Ride safe, Burt.

I hear you Burt.

8 months ago I thought I would try and buy a complete, but in need of mechanical repair, R65. My starting point was that i had the remains of a 1985 (but still twin shock) R65 under the house that I bought in 1994 as a source of parts to repair my wife's r65 that I had managed to get damaged.

Like you I am in Queensland, the first I chased down was a non runner 1980 that had been parked under a tree at Daybro  for 4 years (and it looked it). You could have floored me when it went for $3,800. Next there was one much closer to me, a well used 1983 at Flying Fish Point, the seller had owned since new and used it daily (and it looked it). This one was attractive because it had a kick starter and genuine clock and voltmeter pods. It sold for $6,000.

After a couple more like that I went and had another hard look at my wreck and decided to buy the bits needed to stand it back up.

Most of the bits I've bought have come from England and Germany, some from the USA and minor stuff from everywhere. I have bought very little in Australia as the prices are just plain silly - good example, I had to buy a front wheel. The only two I could find in Australia were at a wrecker in Sydney who wanted $350 and one at Munich motors in
Perth who wanted $285 (and I would hand whittle a wheel from solid alloy before I would ever buy anything from them anyway). A wrecker in Germany wanted $90 for the wheel and $80 to send it to me DHL paketpost which took 9 days from Germany to Cairns. Needless to day, when I decided to buy a late model big valve head I went back to him and as I didn't need an immediately "serviceable"  one (I was going to do valves and seats anyway so that I knew what was in them) he was happy to sell me a repairable core for around $110 + $30 post (By the way it is worth mentioned that when it arrived I had a quick look and frankly if I was desperately short of cash and needed the bike on the road immediately I'd have k-lined the guides and slapped it on and run it for 10~15k kilometers before getting too worried).

As far as the restoration goes, I've been a bit slack recently but will be back into it soon. About to send the heads off for new valves and seats . Once that is done I'm on the downhill run and will register it and ride it whilst my 1978 R100RS has a big birthday.

Long term what I really want is an early model GS, once the R100 is back on the road I will either sell the R65, or turn it into a GS - and bizarre as it may seem, that is not as difficult as it might seem - front end off a large Japanese trailbike, GS swingarm, minor mods to R65 frame to mount a monoshock, a GS rear wheel and the rest is cosmetic.

Those early model R80G/S and R100GS bikes are also probably the highest priced airheads in my area, save for perhaps some very well restored /5 or an original R90S.... but still, even the high prices here don't compare to what your market's prices are.    Yikes!!

Hey Tony,

Was that you advertising for airheads on Gumtree recently?  I agree that prices are silly and a R80GS is out of my reach.  I have some long term feelers out for an R65 which may eventually bear fruit.

By the way, can you share your German suppliers details?  I generally buy parts overseas as well.

Cheers, Dave.
