I have a buddy In Hotlanta that shares my interest in the VW Cabriolet. Brian is a major DIYer and has often lead me down that road while saving me considerable money -which often goes to support my motorcycle habit. Anyway...
Brian has a saying about working with vehicle electrics;

Divorces, Great Coffee, and Electrics, all start with GOOD Grounds.
His thought can easily transfer to having good, solid connections of wires to terminals -car, motorcycle, tractor, whatever.
Perhaps y'all have noticed the crimped wire connections on the Airheads. They are not soldered but they are a solid connection made even stronger by the metal terminal clamping onto the wire sheathing.
I've been using crimp connectors for many years with success. Sometimes even soldering the terminal/wire connection after a crimp. I also, as a general rule, remove the colored plastic sleeve and cover the terminal with shrink tubing for a tidy finished look.
To open up additional wiring options, I purchased an
open barrel terminal crimper plus a supply of 'B' and 'F' type terminals along with a few coupler sets. I'd like to try these terminals to see if they function as the BMW OEM items or as well as my current techniques.
I received good service from Travis at Arkansas-based, Mossy Creek Cycle.
