not a big fan of the diamond plate but it was what i had in alum. and i wanted to see what it would look like. it just covers the gauge faces and key mounts. i need to weld another mount tab to bolt it down with. right now it is  held on with the key mounting nut and two small screws going next to the key mount. pretty simple set up as it is now. i may get a flat piece of alum and then do a brushed look or get a sheet of abs plastic and make one out of black plastic stock??? what do ya think?

It wasn't until Justin's query about the Mac headers that I figured I had missed something...

I kind of like the "angular" styling of the MACs.

i havent been working on it as much as i like with the cold weather, been crazy busy with work. i had cleaned up the wiring, and put it back on. now i have to figgure how did they pack all that wiring around the front!  :-? i took it off, i i thought i knew how it went back on. it nows turns hard because of the wiring. so i took off the headlamp mount and looking at what to move where. then i stated to think if i am doing a cafe do i really want all that wiring? strip it down the basics? i dont know. with the pictures posted of the cafe bikes it does temped to strip it down to as little as i can.

here it is with the fairing and the new orange color. you cant see any of the pearl in the orange but there is enough there to make it shimmer.

i will get the seat back next week from the upholsterer. i have another seat coming from a ebay sale that i am going to do a cafe seat with on the stock pan.

my oldest son now likes it because it looks like a newer sport bike! then told him it was 28 year old, he didnt believe me. ;D

Hey that bike cleaned up real nice.  That fairing kinda makes it look like and alien creature!

i just about have the wiring down to the bare minimum. wow there is alot of wiring missing now. dropped a battery in to see what and where i'm at. pulled the plugs and hit the starter button. it turned over and i had somestuff coming out of one of the cyclinders. so i look down and see something!  :-/ now i'm a little concerd at what i am going to find. remove the exhaust and the carb, valve cover, rockers and the the head. i found a bunch of what looks like sand that is soaked with oil. now i'm wondering. pull the jug off and look and the cylinder walls. seems ok, rings seem ok. could a bunch of dirt get in when the bike was laid down?

this will put me back a little till i can make sure there isnt a bunch more in there. i planned on changing the oil anyways. now i might try to do a flush if i can.

how rare are these with a kick start? i saw one once on ebay, wondering if i could find another someday? or can i use one from a different model and year?

We have 1980, 1982, and a 1984 R65s, and the '80 has a kicker.  I have been told they could be had on all of the bikes but were strictly special order.  They are pretty much useless on the bigger bikes but I have started our '80 ONE TIME with the kicker - after it was warmed up.  I have read BMW farkled up on the 5 speed kickers and they wear out /break very easy.

As far as sand coming out?  I don't know what to tell you but it would make me very uneasy.  You said, "...i had somestuff coming out of one of the cyclinders."  Where did ot come out, out the exhaust port, muffler, where?  If if coughed and blew some crap out of a muffler then maybe critters had built up in there, mud daubers, etc.

all the sand mixed with oil was in the cylinder. i hade the spark plug removed and it came out the spark plug hole. i then removed the the head to see what was going on in there. the oil in the pan is clean? and the cylinder walls are ok. it doesnt show signs that it was run with sand in the cylinder, no marks or scratches in the walls. i havent see something like this before. i am thinking it is from the accident that it was in or during transport the stuff was blown in there while on some flat bed truck? anyways i ended up tearing down the heads & cylinders to take a look. not a big deal, just more time. more i get to learn about my new family member.

I don't think I have ever heard of that either.  Was it in both sides or just one?  Just scrub everything out real good and slap it back together, I suppose...

i got everything cleaned out and back together. i also got in some '01 givi bag mounts. i had figured on having to make some changes to make them work. well all i have to do is cut the rod that goes from side to side in the rear and they will work nice! this weekend is the going to be the finishing up. i hope to have it fully running and ready for everyday use by monday!!!! cross my fingers and wish me luck!!!

it was all robs fault for showing me that buetiful cafe r65. so i changed direction in the rebuild. i am going to cafe it. i have removed the top tree and shaved down the handle bar mounts flush with the tree and polished it up. i had a little head lamp mount the uses the bottom mounts and another threaded mount i found on the bottom of the tree. i now have a small bottom mount 4 1/2" headlamp that uses a h4 bulb. i have a fiberglass tail section coming. the tail is going to be a little different and a normal cafe seat. instead of clubmans i am going with a set of clip ons. trimmed the wiring down to as bar as i can get. wisconsin lets us do alot of mods to a stock bike and still be legal. some may not like what i did or how far i went with it but it will be a trimmed down little blaster.

i have looking at a set of rear sets for it, dont totally understand where they mount to but i will see after i get the new seat on and see how my feet are with a lowered saddle, i might want them back and up a bit.

i know, i know you all want pixs. i will post some when i get the seat on after painting.
