fibre rings for fork dampers
« on: May 04, 2008, 11:01:12 AM »
Just fitted progressive fork springs on 1982 R65 and found damping was really not up to scratch. Disssembled forks to discover the black fibre rings in the damper 'mechanism' have crumbled. Can't have been helping things. I'm rather dubious that these will still be available through the BMW dealerships. Moto-Bins and Motoworks don't show them in their catalogues.
I wonder have any R65 owners been able to replace these rings ?

Pretty well EVERYTHING is available still for many of the older bikes due to BMW's Mobile Tradition program. I know everything for the forks still is, and available from dealerships (for a price) and other suppliers like Motobins etc.
What we have to decide is the items nomenclature as terminology can make part hunting difficult. I'm not 100% familiar with twin shock R65 forks, but could it be this part you are talking about? They start off clear but start turning black as they disintegrate.

Hey Bill, I don't suppose you guys have a cross reference on the 11-digit BMW part # for that part, do you?

I want to get a couple, along with everything else I might need, and have it all on hand before I take them apart...

Many thanks Airhead. Those'll be the ones. It may just be easier for me to get them from this supplier in Oz than spending time searching with European suppliers.

Are we talking part number 24 here?

Has always annoyed me that you could get rebuild kits for the pre-1980 bikes, but places like Moto-Bins always say 'not' for the R65.

Fork oil seal - 31 42 1 230 001
Felt strip - 31 42 1 237 213
Fork boot - 31 42 1 205  (may not be needed unless split)
Fork top O ring - 31 42 1 237 245
Crush washer - 07 11 9 963 130
Ring - 31 42 1 237 215 (or may be possibly 31 42 2 000 384)

Above are the basic consumables, the ring has a bit of confusion about it as either seem suitable, but with no early R65 shocks to check it's up in the air at the moment.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH, BILL!!!   :D

Re: Ring - 31 42 1 237 215 (or may be possibly 31 42 2 000 384)

Chicago BMW shows the first number (bumper ring), but has nothing on the second number.  FYI.

I want to take this opportunity to give Bill "Props" for the most excellent job he is doing with catalogging Beemer parts.
Gr8 job Bill!

Bill, I am having trouble locating the crush washer for the allen-head bolt at the bottom of the fork leg.

Chicago doesn't list it.

A Google search of 'BMW 07119963130' didn't turn up much, either, except for this hit.  But their's is 12x18mm, while the parts book shows the ring to be 12x15,5.

Not a big deal, but any ideas?

Hmmm, interesting, maybe it's been superceeded?  I ordered these about 4 years ago and got them fine.  Here's the line from my order:

07119963130      SEAL RING          *          S                  10      $0.07            $0.72

I would imagine that the 18mm ones would work just fine as that is the OD of the washer.  A better thing would be to find a copper one the correct size as they are usually superior to the aluminum suckers...  I would like to find copper replacements for all of the aluminum seal washers in my bikes.

I looked on our parts list at Capitol BMW and we have 64 on hand of part #07119963130.  I didn't notice that it had been superceeded, but we haven't ordered any in a couple of years...

Last time I ordered those crush washers I cannot recall if I called Bob's BMW or Capital cycle as I wasn't sure of the part number either.
I do know that after talking with the parts guy I did get parts that worked (aluminum).    though I like copper washers, I've found that they
can do some rather unpleasant things when put in contact with aluminum alloys in the presence of liquids that seem to have certain levels of
electrolytes...

Aïda, that's interesting that you have them in stock and another dealer doesn't show a listing for them although they did a couple of years ago.  The line I posted out of my several year old order confirmation was from Chicago BMW.  Strange...
