Thought it didn't rain much in Oz?  Looks like it had its own weather system under the tank.

It'll clean up though.

attempting to take the steering head bearings out this weekeend
I've got as far as getting the forks out

The large nut on top of the right fork came off easily, it was not much more than finger tight. The left one is being a real bitch. Couldn't budge it yesterday. Got it soaking in WD40 now.

sorry to have been away for a while. I got the steering head off and back on again. The nuts came off after an overnight soak and a longer bar on a big socket.
The bearings were ok, not even a hint of markings on the races. Some nice new grease and put back together and they came up ok.

Unfortunately, when I took it back for second inspection there was a different guy who picked up a couple of other things. Easy - indicator lenses and high beam indicator light. Not so easy - push rod seals leaking.

I bought a top end rebuild kit but have now found that it didn't include the gudgeon pin circlips. So another delay arises...

Hi Merlin, Your bike looks no worse then a lot of ours when we first got them. In the restoration part of this sight you can find some good info and photos of some of our work. Mine is "Slow Progress" and maybe I had another one there. To clean up the engine takes a lot of patience and elbow grease. Again you can find several "Threads" That members, including myself, have detailed how they have gone about the task. The best resource for me were the kind members who were always ready to give an answer and support for my restoration and at times great frustration [smiley=bmw_smiley.gif] Dave 2

Not so easy - push rod seals leaking.

They fail your inspection for that?  Or the guy just pointed it out?  Because the misty pushrod seal is practically legend on these things.

In Texas, as long as you ride it in and the head and tail lights work, they give you the paper.  ::)  And although my Honda's inspection is current, my R65 hasn't had an inspection since 2008.  Probably ought to get on that.

oh yeh, they fail you on all the little things
like the blue high beam indicator light on the instrument panel...

other people have since told me that at that place they don't like motorbikes and will do anything they can to get them off the road.
 :o

It's even to the point that it might be worth while to go 400km away to get it tested there instead...

....or maybe I should just move to Texas???
LOL
