Well, I'm off..
« on: September 14, 2012, 03:19:18 PM »
..to a local BMW rally this weekend, run by our local BMW club, the Granite State BMW Riders.   It is in the lower part of the White Mountains of New Hampshire area, so camping in my tent may get a bit chilly - but I've gotta get out of the house for a day or two..  Will take Tillie the Teutonic Twin as my ride and hopefully have some interesting pics to post after I get back.   See ya'll later!

Pack some cool/cold weather clothes, forecast lows look to be in the upper 30's F.

That's 'dead of winter temperatures' to a low desert dweller !!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Have a great time !!!!!

I'm back and finally have feeling restored to my fingers and toes - it did get a bit on the chilly side last night - had frost on the outside of the tent and on on the bikes&grass this morning.   I will sort out my pics and  put up a story soon.   This was DEFINITELY the SMALLEST rally I have attended (30 in all) but they were friendly and pleasant, and I bought some doodads at WhiteHorse Gear's warehouse.

Love the Whitehorse Gear in Conway, Mike! Are your dodads somethin' we all might like to have??? Tillie ran great I bet!! Did she spark some interest.

I'm off to do a bit o' canoeing about 4 hrs. away. Suppose to rain all weekend...showers and be around 55-60 deg. F. Down to maybe 40 at night. The cloud cover will eliminate big extremes in temp. Now doesn't that sound nice??? Errr??? Well it seems that this wilderness group that my neighbour belongs to doesn't cancel their plans for weather reasons. Oh well, sometimes a bit of cloud and soft rain is settling and gentle on the spirit. Calming and lovely to hear at night in my cozy tent. Always have wee pot inside tent to avoid ever leaving tent! I was thinking today that this gentle "London fog" type rain is easier to deal with than the 105 deg. F of the rallies these past 2 summers. Just wear the right gear....same can be said for the heat...right gear.
Had on a pair of goretex socks under my hiking boots today upriver. Socks and feet still got wet.....sometimes I wonder about this goretex stuff. Can't say I've ever been dry in it, whether it be jacket, pants or booties. Maybe just a pair of rubber boots?? Infallible?!! Probably the old shopping bag trick would work better!
1983 R65LS - LRB still my favourite!? 1988 Honda NX250, "Toodles Too" and a Suzuki DR650, "Calypso." All stored in the "Brrrmmm Closet".

On holiday some years back I had  a go at walking up Mt Washington. Got about 2/3rds of the way up before wisely turning back because it started to snow - in early October  !

I know I could have driven up on the road but that's for tourists and cissies.

OK, OK, so I'd better start making progress on my report..
Friday afternoon I quickly packed up stuff and loaded it onto my trusty R65LS -

I got a late start, and by the time I got to the rally site, it was dusk, and everyone else had gone into the lodge to eat, so I setup my tent, ate some powerbars that I keep in my tankbag and went to bed after listening to a presentation on new Garmin GPS products.
The next morning dawned bright and dew-covered:
Some had splurged for cabins at the resort:

While the more steadfast or thrifty formed clusters of tents:

After breakfast, a number of us headed to WhiteHorse Gear in Conway, NH to stimulate the economy.   I bought a clock to stick on the R65LS dash, and a multifunction clock/ambient temp/voltmeter thing which may go on the R65 or may go on my Concours.   Tillie the Teutonic twin was quite a hit at the store, and one of the store personnel said that he had owned one long ago and it was his favorite airhead.  He also claimed to have done stoppies on his, but I didn't let him demonstrate on my bike.   After the store, some people I met from the rally invited me to join them on their ride for the day - but it was a GS1150 and F800GS and F650 and an adventurous K75 rider who were all headed for some gravel mountain roads.   I thanked them but said I was going to keep Tillie on the tarmac for the day.   We eventually also discovered that one of them lives NEXT DOOR to my cousin Dean, about ~200 miles away in Maine.  Yet, we had never met before!   So, I headed off in search of mostly paved mountain roads on my own. and started with taking Route 113 up through Evans Notch, which meanders back and forth across the Maine & New Hampshire border.
Like much of the area, we've got plenty of mountains and rivers here - this River flows down through much of the Evan Notch along the road.

Also like many of these notch roads, this one is closed during the winter and is impassable for several months.   It also isn't that great a shape when it is open, but technically it is paved - one just has to be wary of many large cracks, potholes, bumps, and moss growing in the road.   Oh, and there are lots of bicyclists on this narrow road too.  Near the top of the notch is what I had come to see:

These cliffs on the mountains are home to many peregrine falcons.   Unfortunately there weren't any out flying while I waited and watched.. still pretty though..

Over near Franconia, NH is what might appear to be the remains of some medieval castle-but, it isn't.  It is an OLD iron ore furnace from the late 1700s-early 1800s:

some history/schematic info:

I had planned to ride up to the top of Mt Washington on the auto road to snap some quick pics, but the winds had picked up to 35MPH in spite of the blue skies, and some big clouds rolled over the top 1/3 of the 6200+ foot high mountain.  And it started to rain.   The pack of about 2 dozen H-D riders with some of the loudest pipes I ever heard also took the opportunity to queue up in front of me at the start of the base road, and I decided that was the last straw - I wasn't going to ride up for 5+ miles into the cold wet cloudscape behind those guys roaring in 1st or second gear all the way, so I bailed on that part of the trip..

Next we have an interesting spot just south Mt Washington in Crawford Notch (Route 302).   This is the former site of the Willey House, which was a tavern/lodging room along the carriage road through these mountains in the late 1780s - early 1800s.
The Saco river flows through this notch alongside the road.

The Willey House site is an historic NH landmark, so they've built it up with gift shops, etc.

to be continued..

That square of stones and boulder in the last pic marks the foundation of where the Willey house stood.  The story of it is the Willey family operated the house as a lodge for travelers through the mountain roads in the early 1800s.  In 1826, there was a hurricance which hit the area and caused tremendous amounts of rain.  The Saco river rose rapidly, which prompted the Willey family, with their children and hired men, to run up into the mountainside near where I was standing to take that picture.   They were all killed in a landslide.   BUT, the house was unscathed, as there was a large boulder field (which I am standing at the edge of for the picture) which acted as a shield, or dam, and the landslide was parted and passed around to either side, protecting the house.   The story made international headlines, and drew interest in the region, which eventually led to tourism and the construction of the Grand Hotels, such as the Mount Washington Hotel.   IF the Willey family had only stayed in their perfectly situated house, they would have been safe.   This is apparently also the origin of the phrase "Getting a case of the Willies" meaning a sense of foreboding and desire to take flight..Hmm
https://sites.google.com/site/robertballhughes/Home/new-hampshire-studio/willey-house
Cormorant fishing in the river by Willey House site:

A little further up the notch road one can see that there is a railroad line cutting along the side of the mountains, and, a fairly scary-looking trestle.  It is actually called Frankenstein Trestle, but not because of its scariness - it is actually named after an artist , Godfrey Frankenstein, who frequently painted landscapes in the area.   The trestle is part of the Maine Central Rail line, but hasn't been used for freight in 3 decades.  There is a sight-seeing train from Conway NH which still uses this route and goes over this trestle though.

Some turkeys along the road - I *knew* that I should have found a way to pack my bow and arrows (archery turkey season started that very day)

I explored some other "notch" roads, including Beear Mountain Notch - another "closed in the winter" road..

 then headed back into Conway

and then back to Madison, NH where the rally was for a big barbeque-  Madison is a very small, but picturesque village-

Saturday night we had a bonfire after the eating and traded motorcycle tales, etc. before retiring for a very frosty night - we had a good layer of frost on the outside of the tents by morning.

Sunday morning we packed up, said goodbyes, and I headed out to do a bit more sightseeing along the way homeward.   I stopped to see a big rock (Madison boulder, one of largest known glacial erratics in the US ~ 4700 tons)

"Give me a lever long enough....   yeah, right, Archimedes!!"

In the town of Silver Lake, I discovered someone has been collecting their own full size train set and offers rides on weekends - but not the weekend I was there :-(

Big boy train-toys!  Some of these little car switchers were apparently former equipment at the large OceanSpray cranberry plantations near Plymouth, MA, and some are from other industrial plants, like cement factories, etc.  The old time steam engine I didn't find out from where it originated:

I guess that I am a bit of a railroad/train buff.  Several of my family, including my father, where railroad employees, and even I worked on a track gang for a summer - I think I am still a union member, too!

Nooooo!

I guess that if you cannot contribute enough $$$ to your candidate to be given a large sign, you make your own...

The old Yankee SmokeHouse in Ossipee, NH is a great place to eat.  I have had some better smoked BBQ in South Carolina and in Tennessee which was better, but not by much - this is REALLY GOOD!   IT always helps to bring a rack of their ribs home to the wife to smooth things over after a weekend away, too...

On the way home, I stopped at the New Hampshire Loon Center (nope, they didn't keep me there!).   I didn't see any loons, because there was a steam launch rally going on and all the tooting of small steamboats scared the birds off.  Unfortunately I didn't get any good pics of the steamboats in the lake.   I did find that the Loon Center had a "mechatronic Loon" that was used for some of the loon shots in the movie "On Golden Pond", filmed nearby on Squam Lake.   This things had a swiveling neck and some other bits that were operated by an underwater diver when filming when they couldn't find real cooperative loons!

While we live on a tiny lake/large pond, Lake Winnipesaukee is not far away.   It is a pretty sizable lake (~71 square miles in area) and there is a sizable cruise ship which offers tours around it for a large part of the year.  I have never managed to catch the vessel (MV Mount Washington) while it was docking in our neighboring town of Alton Bay, but THIS time, I did!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS_Mount_Washington

There is also a much smaller ship that deliver mail to residents on many of the ~200 or so islands in the lake, and it has the distinction of being the only floating post office in the United States.

Some places I didn't get to visit on this trip, but will do so later this fall are the Wright Museum
http://www.wrightmuseum.org/
and also the motorcycle museum in Laconia, NH.

hope that you enjoyed this pictorial tour of my weekend.

-Mike
