Holy Gunk, BeemerMan!

It's been a productive weekend working on the new/old R65. Besides ordering more pieces parts, stripping the front end for clean-up and detailing, fixing PO's crappy wiring mods, more cleaning... well, the list is long yet achievable as items get checked off.

The fork seal replacements were the primary chore and the deed is done. The big, Allen-head screws at the bottom of each fork slider came out without twirling the inner damper rod. Great! And after removing the brake caliper, front wheel, fender, and the bottom screws, the lower sliders slipped right off. Reminded me of working on my old Penton/KTM. Unfortunately, it's 13mm extension time to snug up the rascals at reassembly. I actually thought I might get away with forgoing having to pull the springs. Win some, lose some.

Each leg had a pretty good sized glob of oil-dust-dirt-biohazard living at the bottom of the slider on top of the damper rod seat. Ditto for the inside of both dust sliders. Besides the new fork seals, the sliders received a complete cleaning and new felt wipers. Don't believe the PO was into regular front suspension maintenance.

Most of the job time was spent cleaning out the interior of the sliders. I hope I don't continue to find these "doggie extrusions" as I work through the scooter. Gracias to all on the forum who provided me with input and suggestions on the front end work. The confidence instilled made the job go smoothly.

I finally took my forks completely apart last June, and I was quite surprised as to the amount crud in there, and I replaced the fork oil every year since 1981.

Once, I forgot to put oil back in one fork leg !!!
