That be North Yorkshire before you get all exited State side. At Squires last weekend the NY Police were handing out free info/goody bags with a couple of DVD,s of riding techniques, ear plugs, visor cleaners , key rings ect ect the DVD.s were quite good and the magic sponge for the visor is one of the micro fibre self cleaning thingies that Asda (Walmart) sell for 5 Quid so worth a look at if you get chance .
Just wondered if any other Police force areas are doing anything similar .

Not in the states.  Mostly they just collect things from us instead of handing things out. :-/

Sometimes our cops shoot people, but that's not really like handing things out.  Oh wait, like BP said, they hand out tickets.

Our State Highway Patrol has a FREE BikeSafe program that they offer to motorcyclists.  We got from you guys over in London.  I work with Mark Brown, the guy that heads up the program.  He went to London and got certified to teach it here and is now spreading the program across the state and has plans to go nationwide with it.  

You actually ride WITH a patrolman and they evaluate your riding skills.  I took it and liked it.  

So they do give away some things over here, other than tickets...

I went to a Classic bike meet on Sunday and there were two Police riders there on BMW oil heads chatting to the bikers. No freebies though Lou, maybe I need to come to Yorkshire.
Most UK motorcyclists recognise and respect police riders for being highly skilled so any sort of involvement with us ordinary folk is a good thing. Many of them are bikers out of uniform too. I took the bike safe programme as it was then about 20 years back. I remember being nervous as all the bikes were scrutineered by a police rider before the start and my bikes 6 volt electrical system was a bit  challenged when it came to making the lights and indicators work.
 
Our bike safe programme is no longer free it costs £50. Good value if you can book a place its always been oversubscribed when I've checked recently.

I did it just before i finished the rebuild as i hadn't ridden for about 10 years i found it very interesting and i would recommend it to any one ,its supprizing what you learn ...and what you forget.I thought one of the good things with the DVD was anticipating road conditions and "hints" of what may be ahead particularly on rural roads.

New Jersey used to have free basic riders course and advanced riders courses (MSF) paid for out of our registration fees.
Now they cancelled the courses and raised the registration fee to $65 per bike!

We have to pay for the safety courses, but that is money well spent.

After attending one of these courses I found much greater enjoyment in driving and a heightened awareness of potential dangers which gave me much more "room".

I haven't met anyone who differs from me in this opinion.

And it is fun being allowed to ride with other riders under expert guidance for two whole days.
