Britta meets Russell
« on: March 14, 2010, 04:54:00 PM »
Installed a Russell Daylong on the Britster today, made possible by the generosity of our man JDS (thanks again!  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]), and the old gal is starting to shape up pretty well. Took a 30 minute spin to test out the new saddle, and 1st buttock impressions are favorable. That "scoop" does hold you in one place, though hopefully it'll be a comfy one. Guess time will tell.
I've also adjusted out the rear brakes, and had a local mechanic fine tune and synchronize the carbs, set the valves, and adjust the clutch freeplay, so the old gal's running pretty good too. Was able to convince the Ebay topbox folks to sell me another mounting plate for 15 bucks, so now I can move the 46L Givi clone from Guzzi to Beemer. Still need to replace some throttle cables to (hopefully) solve a return-to-idle problem, and replace 1 saddle bag latch, but that's about it.

But back to the Russell, especially for those of you that already are riding one of these things. It has a standard seat lock post that latches down fine on the left, and, lacking any hinges, 2 vertical plates on the right that loosely fit inside the subframe rails, making it a lift-off affair. That's fine, but are there no other attachment points for the seat? Is it held in place by pure butt pressure? It feels solid and doesn't move around while riding, but it sure is movable when sitting still. Maybe that's the way they're supposed to be,  but am I maybe missing something?  :-?

Thanks a lot in advance for any advise.

Well, I gotta say that Britta is looking better and better!  I'm sure she is absolutely loving all this attention you're showering on her!  I hope that return to idle issue is an easy fix with the throttle cable.

You may just have to put a little name badge on her that says, "Hi, my name is Britta", 'cuz I might not recognize her the next time I see her!  ::)

Semper Gumby has the Russell Daylong seat on his.   I think he'll be the one with a good answer for you!

I am really out of the loop here.   Well, I have been out of touch for awhile.  I'm glad to hear that someone has Britta that can really appreciate her as much as John did...........er.......does......er.......well, you know.    John, I do remember something back along there that you were thinking of putting Britta into other hands that would ride her more.

I bought my Russel off eBay for $80.  I ended up having it rebuilt to my  specs.  When you use somebody elses Russel you are taking a chance, because it was built for them and not for you.  If it works for you then great!  My Russel is a *Wonderful* seat.  I don't hang off the side -- I have other bikes for that.  But for riding 20 hours a day nothing beats a Russel.

Good Luck

PS - HI Melena - Great to hear from you lady!!!!  Don't be a stranger please.  Fill us in on what has been going on!!!

Steve, my Russell came on a stock R65 factory seat pan, so it had the hinges on it.  I took them off, but it did have them first.  I have a post poking up from the frame on the right side, and into a hole I drilled in the seat pan, to stabilize that side.  I'm not sure what your pan is.

Steve, not to hijack the thread but you made mention of a return to idle problem.  This is not an uncommon experience and quite often can be fixed by replacing the rubber carb tubes between the carb and cylinder.  The old ones tend to get cracked and brittle.  Air leaks can occur.  Monte had a thread on this within the past month or two.

Oh yes, and glad to know that you have a good seat to sit upon too.  I've always thought that the Russels were butt ugly (pun intended) but apparently they do ride well and that's what's important.   ;D
