My solo seat/rack combination
« on: October 30, 2009, 06:48:47 PM »
Apparently from comments on the 'show me your R65' thread, some folks are not aware of the modifications I made.  I thought a new thread would be simpler.

I bought the seat and rack as new reproductions from S. Meyer, a company in Germany that is more than happy to ship worldwide.  I have gotten very good service from them more than once.

And the seat is very comfortable!!!  [smiley=thumbup.gif]

I still don't have the seat fastened down properly, but my butt holds it in place pretty well.  The special hinge for the front of the seat is made for '81-'84 subframes ONLY!  The front-top mount of the subframes changed in the '80-'81 changes.

I have a 2nd sub frame, and when I get a new dual seat (from a '81-'84 model) I will be able to swap back & forth in just a few hours.

Pretty much the whole story is in pictures, in this gallery:

Enjoy!

As you can see in some of the pictures, the rubber bumpers don't meet the frame exactly.  This seat was made for the mono-shock subframe of the very first G/S bikes, the R80G/S and R65G/S.  That subframe is substantially different.  This "kit" that S. Meyer sells, would bolt right onto one of those bikes.

My solution was to weld tabs onto the sub frame (see here).

What I need to do is drill new holes in the seat pan to line up with with frame!  I don't know why I didn't think of that before!  Now I can cut off those tabs.  The front ones made getting the battery out impossible without loosening the subframe.  They also excluded the option of using the tool box.

Sorry to be alittle off topic, but are they Emgo exhausts on the bike? And if so did they fit and point in the right direction on fitting?
 Cheers

The mufflers are OEM.  I picked them up on eBay slightly used for a very good price!.

That looks really sharp!  I would love to get a tail rack like that for the 45, but I'm just too reluctant to change anything on it.
