New bloke in London

Hi All,

Just bought my first R65 at the weekend and rode it all the way home to London from Somerset in the rain. Couldn't get the smile off my face for ages, I even look forward to going to work in the morning because its another excuse to ride the thing.

Just a couple of questions though, Im hoping to do most of the spannering myself, but in case a job is too big I've heard there is an R65  specialist in Islington. Is anyone ware of a decent garage worth visiting, if need be?

I can vaguely recall where Islington is.....Its in London init?

I am unaware of a BMW R65 specialist in the UK at all.

However I am aware of many genral BMW specialists.

Cray, Sciminger, Defazio, Sexton.  They will all empty your pockets faster than you can fill 'em.  And all have fine reputations.  

There are others, but they are too far from me to worry about.

Not to mention parts specialists like Motorworks, Motobins etc.

You have a relatively simple bike, buy yourself a manual and learn to do it yourself, its part of the fun of owning an R65.

I am in Swindon - and do all my own servicing.

Somewhere in England there is a guy who advertises a "punched" out R65 motor.  He has some secret recipe for adding cc's and keeping the reliability.  Unfortunately tooo far to go for a motor rebuild here in the states.

Thanks guys, Ive just picked up a Haynes manual, hopefully this weekend Im gonna give it a quick service and change the front brake pads. Fingers crossed

Yes, Jim Cray, John Difazio and Andrew Sexton will all punch out an R65 engine.

It will cost you though.

However if you want to run it as is, then a Haines manual and this forum should see you right.

Congratulations on your excellent choice of motorcycle TD. The Haynes manual will be very useful, for balancing up that wonky stool in your shed   .
Apologies, everyone, but I couldn't resist.
Haynes will be just fine for odd jobs on the R65, I suppose.
I don't have one for the R65, but did use one for older heavy flywheel models.
 I strongly reccomend  SnowBums website for anything that needs a torque wrench or more than 3 spanners.
Of course, this forums members provide great support and shared experiences.
 It's gonna be nice weather this weekend, enjoy your R65

I believe the factory R65 service manuals can still be had.  Much better for the R65 than the aftermarket manuals.

I'm in London as well. I got my R65 nearly 5 years ago as my first bike. I have managed to do/learn all the maintanence myself, and its held up well so far. This site;a Haynes man;snowbum;Airheads site are all I've needed. There is also "Neil" in SW London 0208 546 2600, and Steve Grover in Herts, 01582 419 812.
I live in Hackney, and some local mechs will tell you they know whats what with older airheads, but my limited knowledge already outweighs theirs! Good luck though, you'll love it!
