What shade of blue is this?
« on: February 13, 2008, 04:18:14 PM »
Hello all

Can anyone identify this paint shade? It's a 1979 R65, but I would not guarantee that's the year of the painted parts. I know it's hard to tell from a dodgy photo

The paint code sticker has long since vanished.

My best guess, from what I can find on the web, would be Yuka turquoise - but there isn't a colour sample on bmbikes.com
It's not very green for a turquoise, though.

Thanks

Ian

It's similar to the azure blue of my '81 R65, but the azure blue has a bit more of a greenish tint to it.

Add about three decades of 'aging' into the equation to complicate matters,  but if I had to choose at least a general catagory, it would be a turquoise.

I checked the Glasurit website (BMW's OEM paint supplier), and it wasn't any help.

Just checked the ETK fiche from work and the only distinction I noticed was they referred to silver pinstriping on the Azure Blue and gold striping on the Yuka Turquoise.  I don't see any pinstripping on your picture, so it's probably a repaint.  I would think the Azure Blue is more of a true blue and yours looks more like the turqoise to me...just a guess, though.

I've got the azure blue, and it has the gold pinstriping ( I'm the original owner, so I know it hasn't been repainted since it left the factory), so go figure about how accurate the color guides are afer 25 plus years !!!

Take look at the offer from BMW for a Birth certificate for your bike.
I saw it awhile back. Gave it a moments consideration. Thinking if I choose to do a full restoration as an investment this adds provenance to the value. Maybe not.
I would hope all the exact details would be correct on this document. As being issued by the manufactor. But hey, how can you ever be certain of any info provided by anyone.

A birth certificate?  I've never heard of that.  How do you get one?

Huh?  Birth certificate!  That doesn't sound very German!  Curious though....
