Vintage Motorcycle Insurance
« on: March 31, 2009, 12:45:43 PM »
I'm ready to get the '83 ready to roll and need to get insurance.  I've already decided to register the little bovine as "antique" since it's over 25 years old.  That means the registration is good for five years and no inspection.

How about some recommendations for insurance for a vintage motorcycle?  I've come across Hagerty on line but there are scads of agencies out there.  A good insurance company however is a lot like a good dentist or plumber.  Once you find one you want to stick with them.

I think there are several here that use them.  I had licensed a 1965 Impala SS I restored (years ago) as an "Antique Vehicle" and I remember somewhat severe usage restrictions.  Monetarily, the antique plates make a lot of sense as long as the local constabulary isn't too zealous in enforcing the rules...

We have similar restrictions on antique registrations in our state.  Some of the local authorities are very lenient in interpreting the laws, while others are not.   For us, there is an annual mileage restriction of only a couple thousand miles, I believe, plus it cannot be used for regularly driving to/from work or school - this is where the "Gray"  area begins..

To be insured by Hagerty, you need to own another motorcycle for your 'general 'use category.

You are also restricted in usage, like not driving it to work.

Also the bike needs to be worth more than $5000, or they won't insure it.

So I claimed my '81 R65 is worth $5500, so if it is totaled, or stolen, they will issue a check for $5500, no questions asked.

I've got three vehicles insured with them, two sports cars ('79 Trans Am, '01 Z-3), plus the R65, and so far the service has been great, but no claims yet either !!

The  current insurance rate is about $170 per year, on the R65.

Riding all year long since 1993 .
I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!
