A bit of a tornado scare this week
« on: July 26, 2008, 11:08:08 PM »
We virtually NEVER get a tornado up here in new england, but they do happen from time to time - though our local weather folks are LOATHE to admit that it was a tornado that occurred.   This Thursday we had tornadoes in 10 townships in our area, and a tornado passed through our little town just 2 miles east of our house.   Fortunately we sustained no damage, other than my ISP's being out of commission for the past 2 days.  A number of folks on the other side of town weren't so lucky, though at least there were no serious injuries on our town from the storm.

Definitely feeling like we "dodged a bullet" by luck, Providence, and nature's unpredictability.   I don't know how you folks living down in Tornado Alley way can tolerate the fact that so many of these things happen in you area each year !   would drive my wife crazy, for certain !

I pretty much just ignore them as thats pretty much all you can do aside from staying away from places with large amounts of glass.

Tornadoes? Just another form of urban renewal.

The old joke goes...
How's a tornado like an Oklahoma divorce?    Somebody's gonna lose a trailer house!

Other than winter, tornadoes are another thing I don't miss about living in the midwest US.

It would send a chill down your spine to hear the tornado warning siren go off at 2 am, look outside, and not be able to see 15 feet because of the rain and hail and strong wind.

At least here in Phoenix, 115 F. doesn't sneak up on you in the middle of the night and try to destroy your home !!

Been 105 deg. the last couple days here in Fort Worth, I'm ready for the tornado sirens at least I would be getting some rain.

There are tornados everywhere now.  Maybe not the big ones like in the plains states, but there have even been some in California in the last few years.  In all my life I never heard of a tornado in California before.  I really don't want to see one or hear one or even be near one.   :o

LOL ... Lowen, the eternal optimist.

Looks as if you've got your Texas head screwed on straight. Some might ask, "Is your glass half empty or half full?"  Around here, we ask, "Is your roof half gone or all gone?"

We were talking with a young lady we know whose farm was hit by the tornado here last week.   Her house is still standing, though the barn has been significantly damaged and all their fences are either messed up or gone.  Fortunately, all their animals survived.   She has quite a story to tell - she went out to the barn to check on the horses as it was brewing up to be a pretty nasty thunderstorm, and the horses were
getting somewhat antsy after having to deal with multiple thunderstorms every day for the past 4 or 5 days in a row.  She didn't expect
something like a tornado to come by.   When she got to the barn and had just gotten inside, the heavy barn doors on both side blew right off
the building, and she grabbed onto a support beam and hung on for dear life.   Oh, I forgot to mention that she is 8 months pregnant, too !
Amazingly, she and her baby are still fine, as are the horses, in spite of having other parts of the barn and roof getting pulled off by the wind.

After the tornado passed, she got on her cell phone and called her husband who was at the office and said calmly, "I think we need to call the insurance company."

A true, understated new-englander..
