Oilhead Valve Adjustment

Did a little maintenance on the olhead (R1150R) today, I last checked the valve clearance at 6,000 miles, and all 8 valves were at where they should be, .006 in. for intake, and .011 in. for exhaust.

Today at 28,000 miles, all 4 of the intake valves were still at .006 in., right where they should be, and all 4 of the exhaust valves were at .008 in., they closed up .003 in. in 28,000 miles.


Now on to the fuel filter change, the fuel filter is inside of the fuel tank, and if it wasn't for the 2 evaporative control hoses that you have to remove from the tank acess plate that has the fuel pump, filter and low fuel warning switch mounted to it, it wouldn't too bad of a job.

The hoses have the crimped fuel injection clamps installed, and I must have spent a good 2 hours getting them removed.

I also found out what was rattling inside the tank on occasion, it was the fuel filter contacting the fuel tank bottom plate, it wore a groove into the filter, about 3/4 ths the way through the aluminum case.

I took the time to relocate the filter outside the tank, to make it easier to change next time.

The OEM filter from BMW was $23 US, after seeing what I got for my money, next time it'e off to NAPA for a generic fuel filter for about 1/4 th the cost !!!

Another feature of this fuel injection system, is to reset it if you are having problems with it, all you have to do is remove 2 fuses, wait a minute, re-install the fuses, turn the key to the run position, and slowly open the throttle to full open, and hold it for 2 seconds and then let it close, clears the faults in memory, and re-calibrates the throttle position sensor.  

This is an old technology fuel injection system, it was used on 4 wheelers in the early '80's, commonly called the throttle body fuel injection system.

Whoa! THAT is something cool to know! Sometimes I ride my buddy Dan's R1150R, which he brought around Saturday for new rear brake pads and also installed some GS handguards on it. We were talking about this very procedure! Very cool, Bob.

Also every time you remove the battery cables, this 'reset' procedure should be performed, at least that's what I've been told !

Another curiosity with the fuel injection system, a battery that is starting to fail will show up as an uneven idle problem and stalling at a stop light or stop sign, if you have ABS on the bike, an ABS fail light on start-up is another clue the battery is not in good health.
