That kind of riding is one of the reasons I chose the R65 as my mount: As CO of an artillery battery back in 1990, I had a runner who rode his r65 GS like a dream. He thought nothing of crossing a newly plowed field at 60 mph.

After this my dream was an r65 GS but when the opportunity came to buy a military surplus r65 I was adviced against it and told that the "civilian" r65 was much better. An advice I am glad I followed!

I'll sit on the side lines and watch.  I just try to make a turn in the gravel on the side of the road and I'm down.  Sheez!  Guess I've got a bit to learn, eh?   :-?

Thanks for that link Trolle.  That was interesting.  One thing I noticed is that most of those guys doing this are very young.   [smiley=wink.gif]

Hi Helena

At our age we must have a lot more experience and a better overview than these youngsters  [smiley=rolleyes.gif]

Great video, Trolle!! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]  Thanks for supplying it to us!!

At my age, I can at least live vicariously through the exploits (and follies) of others who are younger, and still get a good grin or two out of it!  ;)

Good to see you (and your weather announcements) once again on the forum!    I Love them!!

I enjoyed them tremendously, as well, troll, THANK YOU!

Melena, I'm sure you have heard many times, that the secret to riding dirt is to start out on something small.

Of course, it doesn't hurt to be 18, either!
Like John, I am happy to watch!

That would be fun.  I'm going to have to find someone with a small dirt bike and go play around a bit.  I'm sure I'd learn a lot.   ;D  But I think I'll stick to dirt roads and not try to go cross country.   :o

Yeah, a long time ago, and one of the only times I can remember being on an actual dirt bike, was at a buddy's that lived on a farm.
They put me on their 125 or 250 whatever and sent me out across a plowed field!  I think this was my 1st or maybe 2nd season riding.  Scared me to death!  I think they had a good laugh at the "city boy's" expense!
I had my new Honda CL360 at the time, and was SO wet behind the ears...
It's amazing I survived.

My first ride was a MZ150, which was a very nice little bike capable of a staggering 60 mph. In Town at that time, 1972, the MZ was a nice and nimble bike but I was always very scared when driving on dirt roads because I had a feeling of loosing control. The R65 on the other hand feels very secure on dirt roads and with the right tires I am sure you will go far, Helena  :)

greetings from a slightly warmer and more sunny north - we have not had any snow yet and the wh8la2 is still waiting to get her new digital ignition control installed.

I am actually considering a set of Bridgestone Dual Sport Tires for the R65 if I ever do an Iron Butt Ralley.  Some of the bonus locations are out in the woods where street tires fear to tread!!!!

That is me in 1987.

I have been places no sane person would take their R65.  Which says a lot about both me and the bike.

Can you get them in our sized wheels?  I spent some time recently searching for different brands of dual sport tires but couldn't find an 18" front.

I have over a foot of snow in my drive way; I think I would need pure knobbies.   :'(  It will have been over two weeks since I rode to work, I think, before stuff clears up.  Not only do I intend to finish the 4WD conversion for my '58 Chevy pickup this year, but I'll be looking for a snow plow for it.  My drive way is about 1/4 mile long.

Ed,
You have a foot of snow in your driveway?   :o  I didn't think you'd get that kind of snow in that part of Oregon.  But then maybe I'm not sure exactly where you live.   I'll  have to look at a map.
It has been a very cold January though.

If you have a 1/4 mile driveway, then you must live in a very beautiful place.  If I .............I mean when I........... make it up your way I must stop by and see where you ride.      8-)
