quieting exhaust
« on: January 18, 2008, 02:30:39 PM »
Hello,  My bike is a 81 r65 but it seems to have the black LS pipes on it.  It seems they have gotten louder lately  (maybe my imagination)  and I would like to quiet them back down. I know exhausts need repacking from time to time but how do you actually go about doing this.  I also had the end cap off one pipe recently and saw no sign of any packing, should there be some or do these exhausts rely solely on the baffles to quiet them down?

Thanks
Ben

I haven't taken my LS exhaust apart (I've been hoping, praying and doing everything to keep it together!) but I do think that the LS mufflers use baffles only.  Mine has also recently gotten a bit louder I think due to what was formerly a loose rattly baffle finally rusting enough to come apart...  It was a bit anemic sounding originally, so I don't mind.
These exhaust systems are very hard to come by, and I do not know if it is possible to get baffles to fit or if one must look for an entire muffler assembly.   I also am not sure if the baffle from the stock chrome mufflers will fit the black LS mufflers, though I think that they should ?

I have the LS pipes on my bike and I can tell you that they are a bit louder than the standard pipes. Of course mine are very old and that may be a part of it. One thing you said has me scratching my head. The mufflers on my bike have the ends welded on, there is no way to remove the "end cap". This makes me think that you may have an after market [estraz] set of silencers. Can you post a good photo somewhere of your exhaust?

Bill,
I've been busted here in the past for having a 'too clean' bike. All I can say is that the camera hides a lot of sins and also my can of Never Dull, brake cleaner, turtle Wax Ultra Gloss Detailer, Mothers Protectant [think Armor All with a nice cherry smell], Q tips, Scotch brite, hotel towels, and people in my house who watch crappy television. It's off to the man cave for rock 'n roll, beer and quality time  ;D. This sums it up for me http://youtube.com/watch?v=Q-5d5IfdYK4

The tank is from an r80 g/s paris-dakar model.  about 8.5 gallons.  I dont hit reserve until about 370 miles. You really notice the weight though when it is full so I normally only put about 6.5 gallons in.   I was lucky it was included with the bike since they are big money now if you can even find one.  I love the way it changes the look of the bike.
