RPM check/comparison
« on: January 21, 2007, 03:19:32 PM »
Would someone please give me a RPM check/comparison check?  My bike is a 1980 R65 with a 170 pound Cozy sidecar attached. I usually cruise about 60 miles per hour which is exactly 4000 rpm’s on my bike. Yes, I know that is slow but at my age one’s reaction time is slower and the hill country roads are full of twist and turns. Anyway if some one would be so good as to give me their rpm at 60mph I would appreciate it. Just interested in what the difference is.

Scotty, look in the Technical Q&A section, for the topic "RPM/MPH". My speedo is bouncing wildly and I was looking for some tach readings that I could equate to mph, so Rob was kind enough to use his GPS and run some calculations. According to his figures, 60 mph = 4500 rpm. Stock speedos aren't terribly accurate even when working properly, and read high, so I'm betting your 4000 rpm is actually closer to 55 than 60.
That is, unless the gearing's been changed to accommodate your sidecar...

Damn ! I am slower that I thought I was.......hummmmmmm. Nope.............................. the gearing is the same as on any 1980. Hey Rob thanks for doing all the work......and Steve for pointing me to it. Printing it off...is useful information to have.
