Dirk,
You are quite excellent in photography, and even in better restorations work on those classic motorbikes !

Welcome aboard, we are very glad to have you join us !

You've inspired me to go back into my garage this week and try to get my 1982 R65LS
running again (or at least diagnose what fell apart in the transmission) !

Moin, moin,

as we say in North Germany  ;D

Thank you very much for the flowers. ;)

I really do know, that this is a forum for BMW R 45/65. So I promise, that this is my last posting about russian bikes. :o

As I said, the old BMWs are rare and expensive, especially the motorcycles with sidcar. The same type of motorcycle, built in Russia, is very cheap.

There is some kind of russian scrapyard in Germany, close to Berlin and near the Polish border. I´ve found this place in summer, while I was on the road for a business travel. It was so attractive for me, that I always get back there (with tears in my eyes), when I´m in Berlin. You can get 1 bike with sidecar for 600,-$ oder 3 bikes for 1500,-$.

Here are some photos from the scrapyard. Can you imagine how it smells there, when it´s very hot outside? For me it´s great! :)

This motorcycle is also sold in the United States. I found this one on ebay.com

In Germany there are some dealers, that restore those Seitenventiler and sell them for about 5.000,-$. They look great, like new ones. 8-)

They look like BMW´s, but they aren´t.

@Aida (I´m sorry, I don´t get the second point onto the i): They come close to your loved /2, don´t they?)

If you want to hear, how the Seitenventiler sounds, check this. But before, take the children out. 8-)

Those are neat, Dirk!  [smiley=thumbup.gif]

The sound link was good, too!  Even the children enjoyed it.  ;)

Those are some pics, Dirk!  Like a Beemer graveyard, except like you said, those aren't Beemers lying around in various stages of disrepair!  I, for one, would sure like to have one of those "restored" bikes in MY garage!  ;)

Thanks SO much for sharing these photos with us here in the "States!"  [smiley=dankk2.gif]

Thank you very much!
1983 R65LS - LRB still my favourite!? 1988 Honda NX250, "Toodles Too" and a Suzuki DR650, "Calypso." All stored in the "Brrrmmm Closet".

Hi Sue,

yes, come here. :) I´m sure you will enjoy it.

Altough I have never been there, I think Russia is also a fascinating country, too. This is the transsibirian Route 66:

I must confess that I´m very curious to know, how you all live and how your beemers (is that the correct expression?) look.
I would be glad to see your photos, if it is possible.

Hi Diërk,

really important to stress that the eBay pics you showed are fraudulent in the first degree! I read in another forum that the auction-winners payed the fee (whole heap of money!) and never saw it back (and neither a motorcycle...). Very annoying! >:(

...concernig the two dots on the "I" in Aïda: the hotkey is Alt+0239 on the numpad or choose "charmap.exe" and copy&paste the desired character.  8-)

cu, Stefan

Oh, and Stefan, that is a fine picture of you!  Made finer with the pretty young lady standing with you.  Is that your daughter?  ;)

Well, Stefan, you've taught me something new as well.  I use "ALT+139" to get my ï .   I'll have to try it the other way as well.  Let's see... ï .  That one works, too!  I'll also check out the charmap.exe.

Is it Diërk or Dirk? (What's the hotkey for the ë?)

Thanks for the sound bite! And from the pictures of the transsiberian does not make me want to travel there!
Here's some pics of my bike - looks a lot like yours!

This is me and my hubby, Graham, on our wedding day back in 1995.

This is us loaded up on a cross country trip out west.  This happens to be at a campground in Glacier National Park.  My husband rides a 1981 R100 he bought new.  Mine is a 1984 R65 I bought in 1992 with 52 miles on it.  We use tank covers to protect then when we're all loaded down for travel.

Moin, moin,

great pictures! Thanx for showing them.  :)

@Rob: I´ve checked your album. I like your photos. Especially this one:

What can you see if you stand close to the wall, at Veteran´s Overlook?

There is another very interesting picture in your album. What did you do to your cow, that it´s lying on the grass? :-?

In the url I´ve read the name "Tomfarr". Is this you?
And if yes, are you this, too? http://kleine-boxer.redeker.net/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=420

By the way: the "young Lady" you mentioned, which is standing next to ME  :) is my wife Sybille.

Stefan "the little devil" Kuzzimuzzi is the guy in front with the cigarette. I suppose it was his complete breakfast that morning :) ;D ;) :P

@Aïda ;): Thanx for sharing your pics. Your husband and you have bought new or nearly new BMWs and haven´t sold them through all the years? Absolutely great. I would call that faithfully. You should get the BMW-medal for that. ;)

@John: You mentioned that your "Britta" has run aver 138.000 miles. Thats´s great. Especially for a 650ccm engine. Is this her first engine? Have you been forced to change pistons, cylinders or parts of them? And what´s about the transmission? Did it work correctly all the time? If yes, Britta should get a 1st class BMW-medal, too. And if not, too!

@Mike: Did you solve your trouble with your transmission? What was the problem? By the way: For me it seems that there are running more LS in the States than "normal" R65. Is that correct? In Germany the R 65 LS is very rare. I only know a handfull of guys that ride an LS.

Dirk,

The view below Veteran's Overlook is a large valley.  It was my first time there, and was not so impressed as to take a photo...

The photo of poor cow lying in the grass - it has a caption beneath it telling the story.  Just me being stupid.  I have a picture of myself later that weekend without my shirt.  I'll add that presently.  Not pretty.
(edit) I have added it.  You can see it by clicking here...if you have the nerve!

Yes, I am registered on Kleineboxer as tomfarr.  I was very excited when I first discovered it.  I will try to come back, but I feel self-conscious because I don't speak any German.  You have a wonderful photo gallery there!  Did you see the sticker on my saddlebag in the Veteran's Overlook picture?  You should be proud.  It is the first sticker I have ever put on my bike!
My thread I started last May: http://kleine-boxer.redeker.net/viewtopic.php?t=2777&highlight=

Does your wife have a sister?  ::)

Do you-all drink beer with your breakfast, as well?

It is fun to go back to the Kleineboxer forum and see the now familiar names!

Dirk,

I wish WE had a junk yard like that around here!  Only ones around her only full of Jap bikes...  :(

My wife, Barbara, rides this:

I ride this when the temperatures are cool:

I ride this when it's hot:

I have enjoyed looking at your pics and glad I don't have to ride on any Russian roads...  ;)

Good morning,

@Aïda: when you open this "charmap.exe" you can see the ASCII-Codes resp. Hotkeys for each character in the lower left and right corners, when you highlight the specific char.  ;)

I like your wedding photo very much. There is one member in the german board (who does not participate in here yet), I'd like to see in this manner (for Dirk: he is a teacher and great craftsman. D'you know whom I think of...?).

@Rob: definitely no. Drinking beer for breakfast is not more a common habit over here than it is overseas. But in some regions  (where our beemer-cycles originally derive from) beer is not seen as an alcoholic drink but as a basic-food. And (so I was told) in certain working places they are allowed to have one small beer together with their lunch during the lunch-break. I personally had an experience in a Diner in Nurnberg where I ordered a small beer together with my meal. The waitress showed up with a 500ccm flower-vase. I told her, I'd rather wanted a small one. She replied drily: "Des is a kloanes. Haettst a normales Bier bestellt, haett i Dia a Mass g'bracht" ("this is a small one. If you had ordered a regular size, I'd brought one Liter")  :D

please note that the drinking vessel in front of me on the pic is a cup and it contains coffee :). The beer on the tables are remainders from the previous night.

@Dirk: Did you know Joni Mitchell? She is a canadian singer/songwriter who also performed in Woodstock ("big yellow Taxi")  ;D

best wishes, Stefan

Dirk,

Yep. that's Rob's profile you found on the KleineBoxer forum!  I'd recognize that profile anywhere! ;D

I had one on there, too, at one time.  It probably got deleted by now, though.
