Since getting back into riding a couple years ago after a 20+ year absence - my lovely & talented ex-wife "forbade" it - I've been slowly trying to build up a group of friends, relatives & acquaintances across the US who could potentially be pressed into service to help acquire, transport or store bikes for me. I'm wondering if maybe the members of this forum could be formed into such a group, as we've all got the love of older bikes in our systems and seem to be spread out over the country.
Let me give a couple of examples of what I had in mind:
1) I live in NC, you live in Texas. You stumble across a bike for sale near me, but all the seller knows is that his Uncle Jed rode it for years and parked it in the barn: it's got 2 wheels and a motor. You contact me, I go check it out for you, maybe take a few pics, and you then make a more educated decision about whether or not to buy.
OR, and I see this one a lot:
2) You find a good deal on a bike near me, get all the good info from the knowledgeable seller, and are ready to buy, BUT, the seller's moving and you'll need to get the bike within a week. You either can't get here within 7 days, or don't want to send $5-600 to tote-a-sled.com. So, you contact me, I agree to pick up and/or store temporarily for you, and you go ahead with your deal to buy.
Personally, I think something along these lines could be totally workable. I'm sure there would be liability issues to sort out, and maybe someone here with some legal background could come up with a simple contract. Ideally, this could be done where there was no financial gain on the part of the "doer", beyond possible out-of-pocket expenses, ie: I need to rent a truck to pick up your bike: 50 bucks. And, as we're such a mobile society these days, just maybe I could bring your new bike to Houston or Chicago for you when I'm visiting my sister at Christmas, thereby saving you that $600.
Any comments, suggestions, opinions, etc?
Thanks.
Steve
