New 82

Here’s a pic of the 82 that I brought home around Halloween.  Has 52,000 miles, starts and runs good, but as advertised, “in need of some TLC.”  Notice the bolt-on starter button and electrical-taped road lamps attached to the cylinder bars.  It also came with BMW hard cases and a large windshield that had been removed.  I immediately replaced the tires and spent many hours and rags cleaning everything and removing the wiring for the lamps and illuminated rear mud flap.  I found a neat little nest in the air filter that must have been home to some small rodent family at some point.  There were some carburetor issues early on that were cleared up by replacing a deteriorating fuel line.  I replaced the bolt-on starter with a used BMW one and the starter, horn and turn signal relays went a little goofy for a while, but everything is working OK at the moment.  It has a sort of tick in the left head, that I haven’t been able to positively track down but it doesn’t seem to be a problem, yet anyway.  I’ve taken it to work a few times and on a few short hops, but really have not had opportunity to ride it much with the weather and holidays.  I’ve really learned a lot about the bike reading this forum.  I’ll post another pic of the cleaned-up bike shortly. ;D

Cool, doesn't look like you have very far to go.  It appears that the airbox is a favorite place for misc. rodent squatters to hang out.

If the bags are in good condition you probably ought to put them back on and get used to 'em.  It really makes the bike more useful when you can go to the store and actually carry some crap back home...

I was really lucky to find it in my area and it was the only running bike I'd seen that I could afford.  I still have a few things to add or replace, but all in all it's pretty complete.  Not pristine perfect when you look closely, but hey, neither am I.  I'm also finding that the more I ride it, the better it runs.  So I gotta ride a lot more.

The BMW cases did clean up very nice, but I don't keep them on the bike cause I'm paranoid of having them ripped off here in the city.  They clip on nice and securely, but don't lock onto the frame.  I am looking for the right excuse to hook the cases on and fill them up with something, just to get used to riding with that extra weight.  Again, gotta ride a lot more.  I was also surprised at how well the windshield cleaned up and I have been thinking of putting it back on for the rest of the winter since it is large enough to cover my chronically cold hands.  I received bike with the windshield off and he hardware in a box, so getting it installed could be a puzzler.  Something tells me that I will have other things to keep me busy with the bike in the next few months to get it competently roadworthy.  So the forum will probably be hearing a lot from me this winter and spring...

Very similar to my '82 to which I added a couple of Hepco-Becker bags and the small Scout fairing from Parabellum. I see too the rack on the back. I've hauled big bags of dog food and cat litter on mine...you know, whatever it takes to get out on the road. Congratulations!

Very similar to my old girl (exept for the 61 R50 in the background).  Any quirks or problems with yours?

I bought her quite a few years back with less than 5K on her meter. A couple years after, the clutch went and the spring inside the shifter broke. Other than that, small stuff, some of it caused by dealer repairmen. She's been a good machine. 56K on it now.

Frank,
How do you like your Parabellum Scout fairing?   I've been considering one for my new (to me) '87 Mono R65.  The fairings are made here in north Georgia (Dahlonega), but the cost has slowed me down.  $500 unpainted, $700 painted.  :-/
They sure look great!

Ed,
I like the Scout fairing, although I agree they are expensive. I no longer recall what I paid for the one I have. I selected the Scout more for aesthetics than anything else, plus I wanted the fairing and headlight to move with the wheel. Whether it's worth the money is open to question (the question being, how much dough can any of us part with), but I will say it's quality-made.
