'87 R65 brake cam - which is correct?

I wonder whether anyone could help me? Attached are three images. The one showing the 's' shaped brake cam is an '82 R100. The other 2 are from my '87 R65. Is this the correct brake cam for this bike? The part number is accurate but I can only assume that the fellow that I got it from new what he was doing. It does match the OEM number but there is no number on the cam itself. The '87 cam is flat. Shoes for the two bikes are similar but not quite the same.

The mono shock R65s definitely share parts and part numbers with the bigger mono shock bikes of that era. You could double check the parts fiche to be sure, max BMW has a web viewer that is nice.

I have but I cannot tell from the image on the fiche what it looks like. Can anyone with a 1987 or so (some parts suppliers say post 1980)  take a picture of their setup? I am convinced that it should be the 'S' shaped brake cam but need to be certain.

I had a look at the R65 mono brake shoes on the Motobins site which might provide a clue even though there are no pictures of the cam.

The shape of the brake shoe ends that the cam bears changed radically after 89 which would presumably have required a change in the cam shape.  Perhaps a PO has fitted the later cam to your bike.

I saw that too on Motobins. That type of shoe would fit the flat cam. The shoes I ordered were from Motobins - I told them the year and model and the one they sent me is shown in the image (as also posted above). Clearly they do not fit the current (flat) cam.

May I suggest something ?
Check on RealOem with your bike serial to see what shoes you normally should have (as fitted at the factory). As Motobins provides a nice picture and the BMW part number, you can check if your bike shoes are the correct part and on the correct cam or not. Then, you can make a valid decision as to change shoes or cam...

I did do that. The issue was that the shape of the cam was not discernable. The shoes are correct as shown on the left above with the 'S' shaped cam. For 1989 and later bikes the shoes on the right fit with the 'flat cam'. All good now as I stole the shoes from my '82 R100T, which is on the bench and won't see the road till next year.

Just had the bike out for the first ride. I've never ridden an R65 before and am quite impressed. Handles very well and has loads of zip. Compared to my '71 R75/5, and previously owned /6 bikes, this one ranks near the top.

Just a reminder
If you have the brake shaft that runs wet thru the case
Use the Quad ring instead of the plain Oring
You can get them from McMaster Carr
