Replacement Fuel Cap Seal

Afternoon all,

The seal on the inside of my fuel cap (1980 R65) has largely corroded (see first photo) so I want to replace it.

Am I right in assuming the circled part in the second photo is the right part? If not, any pointers where I can get a replacement? Also any advice on brake (ATEs) fluid, is any Dot4 ok?

I never knew that seal was there  had to go take my cap off to see it. ( yes, I'm not detailed oriented). Sure looks like the circled seal is the one you want.    Dot 4..... I use any fluid just don't use an open can, its cheap, get a fresh can.

A bad seal can allow water into the fuel tank .

Also, check to make sure the drain tube in the filler area is open .

The gasket circled is the good one as everybody pointed. Also do not forget to change the plastic skirt which is not present on the Motobins picture. It will help a lot in preventing water to enter the fuel tank recess. Heat it a bit in hot water to help putting it in it's place.

My cap seal fell to bits in a similar way to the photo above.  One of my O ring kits had a suitable temporary replacement which I fitted with the intentioning of adding the correct seal to my next Motobins order.  I never did get around to buying a replacement and the O ring has worked just fine for the best part of 10 years. Should it deteriorate in the future I still have several more in the kit.

Thanks for all the advice guys, will let you know how I get on! Barry-good shout on the o ring, ill get a couple of these as a back up on the cheap as well.
