Starter circuit
« on: April 24, 2019, 02:23:27 AM »
Morning!! I have been cranking the engine. I have a fuel issue that I'm busy resolving.
The battery ran down, so I charged it up. Still cranks, but no lights, until I pull the clutch in. Cranks with clutch in and out, but no lights anywhere apart from the dash lights (including neutral light) when the clutch lever is out. Neutral light seems to be functioning...goes out when I tread down into first gear.
Relay or a diode somewhere I'm thinking?  :o

Hmm. I’ve been puzzling over that same wiring diagram for a few days now... Anyway, it shows that the headlight and the clutch switch are on the same earth circuit, as is the ignition control unit. Have you got spark?

It does sound like a typical bad earth issue.

I don’t know where that earth point is located though. It looks to be under the tank there somewhere or towards the rear? Im sure someone here can tell us where to look.

Interestingly...I've just been cranking (full charge again) and the issue seems to have corrected itself...?!? Intermittent electrical gremlins....hhmmmnnnn :-?
Anyway..cranking nicely...chuff chuff chuff , nearly there, both pipes hot..but it just won't jump into life.
Hot pipes mean that spark and fuel/compression are occurring..so it must be the carbs....fresh petrol in the float bowls. 32mm Bings..enrichener functioning...?? What am I missing?

How long has it been sitting? Modern fuels like to turn to goo inside your carburettor if it sits too long.

I would check the forward ingition coil mounting clamps, the first generation R65's had all the grounds mounted to it .

It's not uncommon for the clamps to crack and cause unusual electrical problems .
