Disassemble 1986 Monoshock

I'm trying to install a new BMW shock, the book I have suggests there are flats on the shaft to put a wrench on while I unscrew the top mount to remove the spring. Not so on either my 3k mile original or my brand new factory replacement. What's the trick to hold onto the hardened chrome shaft for disassembly? A complete assembly, with spring is no longer available. Aftermarket won't do on this museum piece!

I retract my comments in my PM to you.
I've had a closer look at the parts on RealOem and it seems BMW decided to go their own way.

I do not have a manual for the monoshock airheads, The only part of my suggestion i repeat is take it to a mechanic and make it somebody else's problem, there is an awful lot of pent up energy in a compressed spring and they can do a horrific amount of damage (ask me how I know). Someone who does a couple a month has likely made themselves a tool to make the job easier and safer than t will ever be with hook type spring compressors.

I work at a shop that has the equipment to compress the spring which I've done. Now with the shaft exposed there is no way to hold it while I unscrew the end. I can take it it to the dealer, but I'd rather not.

Monoshocks are somewhat more rare around here; I replaced my stock shock with a Progressive and have no regrets.  I have a Clymer manual for airheads and could check what it says (assuming I remember) this evening.

I checked the Haynes book and it doesn't make mention of removal.  Since you are going to replace it maybe grab the rod with a big pair of Vise-Grips?

Took the shock to Max NH and they installed the new above shock in the old assembly. Ride is transformed. Squeeze and groans are gone!
