Wheel Bearing Question - Part 2
« on: April 08, 2019, 01:39:34 PM »
I was able to find replacement wheel bearings  from a local bearing supply.  As far as the seals, I want to be sure I get the correct ones.  Can I ask for any "shaft seal" that is 22 x 40 x 17?   Looking at the various bearing websites, there are quite a few that show up with the correct dimensions but I can't tell what, if any, differences there are.

Similarly confusing, Max BMW shows two different part numbers but with the same dimensions (and one has a slightly lower weight??).  Any idea what is different with these? The price is the same.

The part numbers are 36 31 1 235 836 & 36 31 1 240 238 .

The local bearing place was extremely friendly on the phone.  But when I mentioned it was for a motorcycle, the guy said they didn't sell bearings for automotive applications, so I should pretend that I never said that.........    so that's why I can't ask too much there about the seals.  The ones I have are Elring/BMW so there's no way of hiding that if I wanted to show them.  And my local BMW place is closed today but I'm never hopeful with them anyway.

Thanks in advance.

Here's a link to the RealOEM site .

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=0364-USA-09-1980-248-BMW-R65&diagId=36_0144

The part ending in 836, has been replaced with the part ending in 238 .

Most likely a change in supply from a different manufacturer .

In the future, refer to your motorcycle as a ' farm implement ', that was the term a one time dictator of Germany used to describe BMW motorcycles !!! ::)

Ok, thanks for that.  I guess maybe BMW still has some of the old ones left?  There were actually 3 listed on the fiche, but it did specify that the third one was NLA.  It says -836 "was superseded by XXXX -838 (the NLA one)" which, I believe, is at least grammatically incorrect.  Anyway, you can see why it's confusing.  But at least I know they should all be the same and -238 is probably the latest version.

As for finding a non-BMW alternative - I'm not even sure if farm implement would be acceptable to those guys.  I was thinking rocket ship.    ;D.
The last thing I said to the guy was it was for a "top secret project" and he laughed and said OK.
I'm assuming it must be some kind of stupid liability thing, but he didn't elaborate.  And he didn't give me a hard time, just said nit to mention what it was for if i talked to anyone else.

But back to the original conundrum - do you think any shaft seal of those dimensions is the right kind? Or do I need to ask for a particular type (but without vehicular terminology)?
Now I know what to order but was hoping I might be able to get it at the bearing place.

     Thanks for the info.

Coincidentally - I was thinking about that farm implement thing, right about the time I was going blind reading Snowbum's novel on "preloading".
I thought yeah, right, I can see this happening out in the middle of field somewhere......   >:(
