Wheel & Drive Spline Lube
« on: July 24, 2018, 05:41:41 PM »
I've taken my rear wheel off to have a tire installed and I know I need to take care of the splines.  This is my first time so what do I need to know?  I know I need to clean them first.  Do you all apply with a brush?  And I know it shouldn't be too thick but what's a tip on knowing the right amount?  And which ones do I lube - wheel, drive, both?

And does anyone know of this stuff and/or if it is suitable?

I'd use it on the rear wheel drive splines, but not on the gearbox splines, but then you didn't ask about the gearbox so I suspect you have already thought that through.

The tube says "extreme pressure" bearing lube so I think it will do just fine, and if it flings it's annoying but not show stopping.

Thanks Tony.  Yep, this is just the wheel splines for now.  And I happen to have this stuff already.

I'm happy to hear your recommendation for the gearbox, especially if it's something I can easily find.  I've read a bunch online but so many are NLA, the formula changed, etc., etc., it's mind numbing trying to decipher what the necessary parts are.

       Thanks again.

Motobins have a suitable product. Failing that whatever your local BMW riders group uses. You used to be able to buy a Honda Moly paste but I've heard it isn't around anymore, I've never used it. Aside from one episode of using moly CV paste that ended badly and which we do not speak of, I've always simply used whatever Motobins were punting as being suitable.

Without going into the unmentionable incident above - if you use the wrong paste on the gearbox splines, and especially if you use too damn much of it, you are going to be be fitting and installing a new clutch plate, and that is after some merry hours minutely cleaning the flywheel and pressure plate.

The Honda stuff was one of a few that is always talked about but unfindable.  As far as a rider's group.......  I'm a loner......  I ask at my local shop but sometimes I wonder about them, so I check here as the answers are usually more honest and knowledgable.

I was thinking of ordering a few things from Motobins so I'll check their site.  I thought if there was something I could get locally, I'd grab some and do my wheel and the have it for the clutch splines later.  But I can just use what I have for the wheel for now since you say it'll be suitable and look for the other stuff for future uses.

Honda Moly 60 has been replaced by Honda M77 .
I mixed Honda Moly 60, with wheel bearing grease, so it was thicker and wouldn't get thrown off as easy as straight Moly 60 .

Hey Bob Roller - do you know if the 77 is the same as the 60?  That's what I was talking about above, I thought I'd read where that was the replacement but that it wasn't the same.  I don't know enough to determine if it's just people being picky or if it's a big enough difference to worry about.

In a lot of areas it wouldn't be a big deal but I know the splines are something you want to use the correct stuff on.  Both for the life of the components and the fact that it's not necessarily an easily accessible spot to get to.

I have no experience with M77, just read it was a replacement for Moly 60 .

I was doing some Googling and the 60 vs 77 is one of the things that folks argue over. Some say it's fine, others say it's not the right type of stuff.

I saw what Tony was talking about at Motobins, I may try that.  They sell the stuff I posted above for the final drive.

I also saw that EME has one, I'll look into that one since it's closer to home.  Maybe they're trustworthy since they're BMW folks as well?

Hello !
I think you have in your town, or near it, a shop selling industrial parts (hydraulic hoses, bearings, bolts, etc... for the agricultural or industrial sector).
Go see them and ask for a suitable grease for lubricating splines (high pressure, difficult access, high temperature). I bet they will offer you suitable lubricants in sizes ranging from the small tube to the 200 l drum. And at a price so low, you'll want to buy all the shop.
These application are very numerous in agricultural or industrial machinery. So maintaining these machines is widespread.
And of course, can't be too expensive because industrial people tend to look at the best offer every time.
Just my 2 ¢...
