Hanguards

A couple of us were discussing this in another thread around the time of the Great Forum Outage of December 3 and it looks like those posts are gone.

I looked here and other places online and have seen that GS handguards will fit our R65's.  And there was an old post here on the forum that said as long as you had the rectangle master cylinder, they were a direct fit.

However, when I've gone to Max and some other sites, there are two different versions that come up and they look slightly different.  Can anybody tell me which are the ones that will fit the best/easiest?

Here's a picture of one set I've found.  I'll see if I can find a decent pic of the other ones that show the difference.

Here is what Max shows for the same part # as he ones above, for the R65 GS.  And there there is another one, different part number in white. And I'm not sure if there is anything different other than the color?

And what confused me more was that the same part number search also comes up with this page for the R100GS.  The parts look the same but the drawn picture looks very different.

Any ideas?  I'm just looking for the one that will go on the easiest, either direct fit or with minimal modification.

I have a set of handguards on my bike that came off an R80GS. They look like the ones you show coming from an R100GS. The only issue I had in mounting them was the cover over the master cylinder. Since I have an 'S' style fairing mounted the master cylinder sits close to the fairing and the handguard piece that covers the master cylinder interfered with the fairing. I trimmed it off and have used them ever since.

Hey Marcmax, thanks for the pics. Those almost look like the ones at the top (the photo I posted) also, you think?

The ones in that picture are at ECS which happens to be where I buy Volkswagen parts.  Good price and free shipping if I get them there.  Otherwise I can try from Max.  But if you looked at the links, maybe you can see why it's a little confusing if you don't have them in front of you.

I think you would be good with either one of them. My only issue was because of the fairing I am using. I had these same handguards on my K75 for a while and the master cylinder portion fit perfectly and that was a square master cylinder as well.

Do you know if the ECS parts include the mounting hardware as shown in the photo??

I would assume that if it is shown in the photo, it should be included.  But you know how assuming works........

The listing for these has no descriptionnot details at all.  Just a few pictures and the part numbers. I might need to call them, if I can remember, I'll ask the specifics about these.

Just talked to ECS, he told me that if the picture shows it, it's included.  They take the pictures from what they get in.

He did tell me that they don't have any details on that sort of stuff.  But that they do distribute genuine BMW parts.  Unfortunately, there's no way to pull up a general listing for them.  But if you have a part number, you might find it on their site.  I've found things there accidentally and through Google but has trouble searching their site, so keep that in mind.  I think their search function is a bit finicky.
I'm not sure when, but I might order these. I'll be sure to post if I do.

They are super easy to install. There is a molded in ring that the mirror stem passes through and then a screw and nut to pinch the other connector. Longest part will be removing the mirror and reinstalling it.

I had to butcher the right-hand cover mount, and it was held on with a zip-tie, but it worked.
I'll try and post a picture when I get home.

The clutch side fit just like it was made for it.
The brake side was very rough, but then, my bikes were never show queens.

Most of the ugly was covered by the instrument cowling.

AS in California has the black guards for $39.78 and free postage (ECS wants $44 plus $10 postage). Have written them asking about the mounting hardware. Will let you know what I find out.
