Siebenrock oil pan extension on the R65
« on: September 04, 2017, 10:50:38 AM »
So I had $100 burning a hole in my pocket
I wanted to reduce the oil getting into my cylinders (Thru the breather) as much as possible and get my oil capacity to 3 qts and still be 1qt lower in the pan than the stock 2.5qts ( hate having 1/2 of oil laying around)
So i added a Siebenrock oil pan spacer
It allows up to 4qts of oil in the later bikes with the deeper oil pans
But I will run it with 3qts (oil is on the 1qt low mark of the dipstick)
The spacer is mostly beneficial in the older bikes with the shallow oil pans

The pan and pickup spacer fit to the engine just fine
But it fouls the kickstand spring brackets
So the first thing is to grind down the sides of the spacer to match the width of the pan

The original spring brackets hook still will not clear the pan
So new brackets need to be made

Here are the new brackets made from 1 x 1/8 strap
The end with the keyhole needs to be ground down to 1/16 inch
The hook is made from a 6mm bolt threaded  into the strap and the head ground down thin
Then weld from the back side

After that it is good to go
I glued the spacer to the pan with Permatex Ultra Black Silicone
I didn't want to deal with the possibility of a leak from 2 gaskets
No reason to separate the pan from the spacer anyway
The pan and spacer have basically become one (more rigidity)
I used 50mm bolts all the way around
The kit supplied 55mm bolts but were a tad to long since  I removed the  lower gasket

I still need to lengthen the dipstick
May just get one of the older metal ones and drill and tap a new stick into it
I also looked at putting  Sight glass in the side of the spacer

If it does nothing but add a 1/2 qt that is fine

I was hoping  also that it may lessen  the vibration
But It could make it worse  :o

I also still have this Cool Logo on the front of the engine 8-)

Good work.  I had something similar on a bike a while back but it also had "cool-tubes" running long-ways.  I think on mine I heated up the "J" on the spring mount and gave it a 90 degree twist...

Nice Job!
I'm also thinking of doing the same mod to my Bike.

So even with the later model, larger oil pan, with the spacer installed, it'll still clear the center stand, but will interfere with the spring brackets?

Yes it clears the center stand but fouled the hooks
I only have the lower cross bar
Justin was able to just twist the hooks to get them to clear
Good idea I didnt think of that
But just remember
Their seems to be  variations on the center stands so yours may be different
This is an 1982 with a Mfg date of 11/81

I am still working on lengthening the dip stick
I will post up when I get it sorted out

The picture I posted was a 1980 model with a Reynolds stand.  Not sure if there would have been any issues with a stock stand...
