Carb question
« on: September 01, 2017, 11:26:36 AM »
Hello, I have not been active for awhile so I will tell you that I have a 1983 R65LS that I resorted about for years ago (16,500Miles). She is a beauty and up until last week has been running well.
This season ( I live in Maine, USA) her idle has been just a bit too low, running just under 1000RPM. about a week had passed since my last good ride, I decided to reset the idle screws with the engine cold, (3/4 turn out from seat) when went to start it it turned over but would not fire. I pulled the plugs and they were both dry but their coloring was good. I cleaned, re-gaped them, added fresh fuel and checked the cables to be sure they were all seated. Once again she would not fire only turn over.
About three hours later when I went to try again she instantly fired and then just raced towards the red line! I shut her off and the next morning I tried again and the same thing happened!! I waited awhile and tried again and now she is back to turning over but not firing!! Any suggestions of what I should consider doing next? PS the carbs re rebuilt by the dealer in Maine about 7 years ago.

The adjustment you made, was idle mixture, not idle speed .
At least from your description you gave .
You need to do a carb synchronization to get the carbs adjusted properly .

I agree fully with Bob.
But you haven't rode the bike for a long time, so why not check/adjust the valves and check the ignition before tuning the carbs ?

Thank you Bob, I will revisit my carbs when I have the time to focus on them and review what I did. It would not be the first time That I have done one thing thinking that I was doing another. Dave

Sounds like you have a throttle shaft sticking or throttle cable sticking

If they didn't replace the throttle shaft seals when they did the rebuild they may be tight

Another possibility is if you screwed  the idle speed screws in until they stopped and backed out 3/4 turn that thing is going to scream when it starts

The Idle mixture screws are adjusted this way but not the idle speed screws

You have hit the nail on the head, that is what I did! I have not had a chance to reset the idle speed screws, but the previous two replies helped me realize what I had done. I am happy that this is a simple fix.
