Someone on here (Montmill I think), mentioned that a few dabs of white paint on the timing marks helps with the visibility if you have the gearbox off at any point.

1983 R65LS completely refurbished to my liking.
1985 R80 nearly stock rebuild (basically new bike).
1981 R65 (box of bits).

Actually, you can mark the timing spot without opening anything except removing the rubber button.
Use either a white pencil from art store or Tippex on it's small paint brush.
Perfect for the job and no excuse for waiting ...

I did set my valves and thanks to all above. Several helpful hints, especially  the old thumb in the spark plug hole.

Did mine this past weekend:
Jacked up the bike with my new Harbor Freight Motorcycle Jack, which put it at a comfortable level for this weak back of mine. Popped the covers off,(after popping open a Schiner Bach) pulled the plugs, stuck in a straw and rotated the back wheel while in 5th gear.

WAAAAY easier than laying on your back in the dirt during a HOT Texas summer afternoon adjusting VW valves....  ;)
