Owners / Shop Manual 1980 r65
« on: October 10, 2007, 02:54:25 AM »
Does anyone know if there's anywhere out there in cyber space where one can download a PDF or something equivalent of the 1980 BMW r65 owners/shop manual?

Hoping to hear some good news.

Hasta pronto. :-?

There is not one that I am aware of.  Since the owners/riders manual is still in print
and orderable, it would be a copyright infringement if someone were to scan in the
whole document and post it on the web for free distribution.   There are several sources
that one can buy this, and the Haynes and Clymer service manuals, if you're interested.

While I've thought that Clymer or Haynes might do well to publish their books in PDF format
as well, I've decided that it is more useful to have a book that I can leave open on the bench
or bike seat, and thumb through with greasy fingers if necessary, rather than subject one of
my computers to getting covered in grit, dirt and grease out in the garage/shop.  Sometimes
I think good old fashioned books are pretty handy.

I just aquired an '82 R65 and need a manual.  Between Haynes and Clymer, is one better than the other?.  And if you buy a shop manual, would you still need an owner's manual? Seems like it would be a good thing to have as well.  What are some sources for the manuals, especially th owner's.

Thanks,

Usual places to look include amazon.com, ebay, and other
usual places.  Plus, BMW manuals can be ordered from BMW
dealers.  The BMW shop manuals are very "encyclopedic", and cover
everything about specific models (these factory manuals are model specific,
and are not available for all models of bikes - though there is one for R65, I think),
repair, etc. but are also quite expensive items.  You can get the BMW rider/owners manual (that
fits under the seat and covers basic, everyday things) as well as the Haynes and Clymer manuals
from Capital Cycle, also.  I don't think that one has to have the factory manual to do maintenance
on the bike, unless perhaps if it comes down to very advanced topics like rebuilding transmisstions or refitting/grinding
crankshafts and con rods.

Owners/Riders Manual
01 41 9 798 291        1979-84 R65        $22.95

Clymer
M502        Boxer Models 1970-88        $39.95

Haynes
249        Boxer Models        $19.95

The Haynes manual has color photos, and covers certain areas better than
the Clymer manual.  But the Clymer manual is thicker, covers more models/variations,
and often goes into more details though with black&white pictures.  There are some errors
in either manual, so I have one of each to compare with if something just doesn't seem correct.
some may disagree, but if I could only have one, it would be the Clymer.

I've got a BMW shop manual part number : 01 51 9 798 092 (01/80 version), I show it being available in the US. The shop manual assumes that you are trained in BMW motorcycle maintenance, so a lot of key techniques and tips are not included in the text, as you are supposed to know it already . Not very expensive , about $55-65 US. There may be a later version than the one I have, as it shows '79 and '80 model year bikes, and wiring diagram.
'81 R65
'82 R65 LS
'84 R65 LS
'87 Moto Guzzi V65 Lario
'02 R1150R
Riding all year long since 1993 .
I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!
