One bad ignition coil
« on: March 10, 2016, 04:20:52 PM »
What would you done if an ignition coil goes bad.  I have points in the bike'.  A dealers price is about $110 for one coil.  There are bosch 6v coils for vw and other cars for half that price???   Anyone have any thoughts on this subject?

Here's some site for ignition coils .

I think Euro Motoelectric is probably a good deal for two coils .

John Rayski, owner of Euro Motoelectric is probably one of the best people to do business with .

Rick Jones of Motorrad Elektrik is another top notch person for BMW parts .

 [smiley=tekst-toppie.gif]  What Bob Roller says.

Pick up the phone and call either gentleman, Rick or John. I've done business with both and can vouch for their knowledge and integrity. Can't go wrong with either.

This is my backup coil, from a Mitsubishi Lancer.  I have run it on the bike, and compared it on my scope to the stock coil, it's all good.  I've got 2 of them, they should see me into the next century.

The old Mitsi Lancer!  What sort of year Motu?  Good back up, could maybe cost $50 NZ at the wreckers?

Hello !
Go to a car graveyard and ask to see the ignition coils. They should have a large bunch of them from various car component makers. Bring with you your ohmmeter and choose the one with the closest primary resistance matching the OEM coil of your bike. If you have points it will be around 1.5 Ohm if I'm not mistaken.
If they are like here, they will force you to buy the set of two coils, but take them and you'd have a spare. Here, i pay 10 € for the set including the plug wire.
The most difficult part is to get a proper jig for installation on the bike... (you do not want to loose the coil during riding, isn't it ?)

They'd be off a '90's Lancer, but any wasted spark coil will work if the resistance is in the range. If you dual plugged a Subaru coil pack would be perfect. These were lying around at work...better in my shed than the bin.

If you going with 6 volts coils I think they should be a matching pair otherwise there is a risk of  different voltages across each coil. The original 6volt nominally 1.5 ohm coils are in fact closer to 1.2 ohms. VW coils would be fine.
Alternatively any 12 volt dual output coil between 2.4 and 3 ohms.  Harley coils are readily available in that range and much cheaper than some others. Honda gold wing coils are another source.
