correct muffler challenge
« on: November 19, 2015, 11:44:06 PM »
I ordered some mufflers from my 86 R65 from an Ebay company. The ones they said would fit were for an earlier model and much too long. The ones in the link below appear to be the right style and according to what I can tell should fit. the fitment chart says yes but further down the page it says they don't fit an R65.
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Mac-006-0327-Whispertone-Replacement-Slip-On-Megaphone-Mufflers-BMW/201453900578?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140620091118%26meid%3D90c9a73795ee48a782328d445641ecfd%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D231144150086
After discovering the last ones didn't fit I called MacPerformance in California and he said  that they had never built any for the 85-87 R65s. I asked the dimensions for his part number 006-0327 and he wouldn't provide them. So can anyone tell me if they think they will fit my 86 R65? They appear to be the same as mine. Thanks

No dimensions on the whispertones so it's hard to tell. One difference is R65's have 36mm headers and other airheads 38mm or for some R100's 40mm.  Sometimes they provide reducing rings to cope with that.

It occurs to me that there are some "fixed points" that can be used to assist in deciding if the Whispertones will fit.

The two "fixed points" are the exhaust ports and the subframe mounts for the mufflers.

I would measure the distance from the mount to the point where the mufflers mount on the header pipes on the mufflers you have, I would also try to get a sense of the "proportion" of muffler on either side of the mount point - then compare to the best photos you can find of the Whispertones.

Next measure distance to the end of the headers on you existing pipes, also, look generally at the headers on the bike, do the ends line up or nearly line up with anything reasonably "fixed" like the foot peg or the gear shifter etc.

Then look at the whisper tone mufflers, if they seem to project forward from the subframe mount at least as far as the ones you have, then they can be made to fit - if need be you can shorten up the headers. But if they do not project as far forward you may have more complex problems.

I would not worry too much about the 36/38mm problem, a strip of 1mm shim stock can be easily cut and used to ensure a leak free joint.

Thanks for the feedback. I have done some more research and it looks like the 1985-87 R65, R80, R80RT and R100RT all have the same BMW part number. So based on that and the info on the sellers site, that it would fit my R65. Does that make sense?

If the part numbers are the same, so are the parts (otherwise part numbers wouldn't be good for getting replacement parts).

Therefore, if the muffler fits a bike that has the same muffler PN as your R65, it will fit your R65 too.

R65 Mono mufflers are the same as R80 - the headers step up to the muffler.

I am being a bit overly cautious as I don't want to go thorough another episode of getting the wrong mufflers ad having to return them. I would rather look a bit dumb here asking the obvious and having it confirmed. It is a whole lot less painful. I certainly appreciate the feedback I have received.
Cheers

Keen to get Betty (as named by my 6 year old) back on the road so will make a call on ordering exhausts/silencers by Monday.

Before I do wondering whether anyone local in Melb/Vic might have a spare set I can measure up  ;).

Otherwise looking online I see Moto-bins has replacement SS Keihans at similar price to what i can get Chromed steel for from local suppliers. Lead time looks like it wouldn't be any worse either. - Does anyone have any expereince with these or the Sito Chrome they're advertising?

Glad you found what you needed.  I just located mine yesterday and was fixin' to message you.  They were buried pretty good up in the attic.
