r65ls header pipes

I have to replace the header pipes on my 1982 r65ls. Can any fellow Aussies point me to an Aust. supplier. Staintune make one that Munich motorcycles also supply. Any others?

Hi Steve - I bought an R65ls exhaust from staintune more than 15 years ago. Its still going strong after about 40,000 Klms. It got seriously stained and ugly over the years but with a lot of time and a small dremel and polishing wheels it came good again. A testament to the quality of the finish and the metal used. Hopefully I've been able to attach some fotos to show you. The deep brown discolouration took about a week to remove on each header but as you can see it was worth the effort.

+1 on the Staintunes

My R1100RS has been wearing them since 1982 or thereabouts and the R65 had a set when I bought it in 1995 and they are back on it now.


They are worth the cost.

I finally received the header pipes from Staintune. There was a holdup as they had none in stock so I had to wait for a batch to be made.I am very pleased with the result. While the bike was off the road I bought a can of contact cleaner and pulled apart all the elect. connectors and gave them a good flush even though they were not visually dirty...... several annoying starting issued vanished.

I read 'somewhere' that the single and / or double X-overs aided in quieting the exhaust note. BMW Motorrad may have been shooting for better performance or fuel economy. Quien sabe?

As to needing them or not, I removed the doubles from my 1983 R65's scruffy headers. Used the now scrap cross tubes to make patches for welding over the holes in the headers after cutting away the stubs. Ultimately, the headers were wrapped with f'glas heat wrap back to the Dunstall repop mufflers. No difference in performance or fuel burn.

Staintunes have the balance pipes included. I'm not absolutely certain what they actually do. My 1972 R75/5 only has one at the front of the headers, yet my 1985 R65 has two. I believe they're some kind of performance enhancement. Their function is to equalise back pressure so I'm assuming that they have something to do with creating even wear and/or heat transfer on the exhaust valves. I can't imagine that BMW would have put them there for no reason.

The mufflers (or silencers) have the task of quietening the exhaust note. Staintune mufflers actually have more bottom end (or bass frequency) than the OEM mufflers, but I don't consider it excessive. This seems to be more apparent on idle.

Exhaust crossovers are made to aid in exhaust scavenging.  The exhaust rushing through the LH header will  essentially pull a vacuum on the crossovers (like a carburetor pulls gasoline) and help exhaust flow out of the RH header and vice versa

They probably do give a little bit of performance at high revs, but I'm inclined to trust Monte's "butt dyno" that you won't notice much, if any performance difference.  They also essentially hook up each cylinder to two mufflers instead of one, quieting the exhaust.

Thanks all. I'll go with Montmil's "butt dyno" opinion (love that phrase!). Doesn't seem to add a whole lot (if anything) to performance and I don't really mind if the bike is a little bit louder if I fit a custom exhaust, so each pot can run through it's own cylinder, I figure.

I had actually though about scrapping the crosstubes but cutting them up to patch the holes in the headers as well, so should work with the wrapping to cover the cosmetics. I like the idea of wrapping as well.

Hello !
I remember speaking with a BMW rep at a factory show at the dealer's.
He told me they helped flattening the torque curve and remove dings in the torque curve.
I doubt it is very important. But as you own a R65LS, so a very collectable bike, for the sake of sticking with the look I would have the two cross over installed... Just my 2 cents, here...
