Sluggish first couple miles...
« on: September 01, 2015, 12:34:08 AM »
I have a question for all of you. I ride my bike to school everyday. I'll turn the choke on as I throw my gear on to allow the bike to warm up. It'll take usually like 5-10mins if I were to guess. I'll turn the choke off and has I ride off in first gear, it chokes a little bit. Sluggish has I roll onto the throttle. But after a few miles, I don't have any issues. Is this normal?

Rather than fully close the enrichener circuit, leave a bit on as you ride off and close it fully once the engine will run happily without it Much depends on ambient temperatures and if the engine is actually up to operating temps prior to your departure. Yep, that's normal ops on an Airhead.

It's about how the carbs are jetted and set up.

I ride to school every day and my bike starts instantly on the button and the last time I needed to use the enricher would have been last April. I'll need to use it soon as it gets colder but basically any temperature above 10 - 12 deg C  it starts without any enrichment although it won't idle for several miles. When it does need enrichment to start it goes off before I ride off.

So to get to the point I think your carbs may be set up too weak. Of course it could be argued that mine are set up too rich but I still get outstanding MPG (last tank 70 MPG Imp) and no carbon build up on the plugs.

Logically needing enrichment to start is normal but I just go with the convenience of how it works.

You'll have to find the right technique fro your bike .
Usually, it's full choke to get it running, then go to the half detent on the choke, while you put on your helmet, jacket, etc .
Then close it until you get a smooth idle somewhere around 1300 rpm .
Then ride like this for a mile or two, then fully close the choke .
You'll need to find what technique works for your bike, that's what I do on three of my R65's .

Riding all year long since 1993 .
I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!
