Your preferred valve clearance spec is? Lookin' for single feelers for the under seat kit and need to know What the collective wisdom is on the correct intake & exhaust spec.  Didn't have 4 days to root thru snowbums site  [smiley=dizzy2.gif] [smiley=dizzy2.gif]Thanx

Rich , I've been using .006 for intake, and .008 exhaust, the owners manual that came with the bike shows .004 intake, and .006 exhaust. The BMW shop manual I have shows .002 for intake, and .008 for exhaust. So go figure what it's supposed to be !!! My valves might be a bit noisier than they should be, but I've been told so many times loud valves are happy valves.

Thanx Bob. Yes I also subscribe to the happy hammering sound when it comes to push rod motors. Off to the Dog Track for some expendable tools (Bob knows what that means)

I adjust mine to the "loose" side of the .004 and .006 spec, so they are probably closer
to .005" and .007" - hearing the "ticky-ticky" is generally a good thing with the sewing machines...

.006" intake .008" exhaust 03/1980 model with the smaller valves.  Sound like happy gnomes tapping lightly on china.  (Thanks to Nathan/Dean at Boxerworks)

This is weird.  MY owner's manual says to use .004" and .008" clearances, intake and exhaust respectively.

I hope I don't get in trouble for this but Snowbum says:
The R65/R45 models probably should have the valves set a wee bit looser, .006" intake and .010" exhaust is fine.
Those are the setting I use and I get better starting and less noise, in my opinion.

Having a bit more clearance also helps things run a bit cooler as well, which isn't a bad thing for these valves either.

Those are the ones I actually have USED for the past 25,000 miles or so; I got the figures from his site as well.  My earlier post was just to point out how many different sources seem to indicate different clearances.  I still think that's weird.
