When should the timing chain be replaced

I must admit I think the Motorworks web site is easier to navigate but as they are local to us lucky folk in Yorkshire (I pass them regularly) it nice to call in and collect any bits and press the flesh so to speak they are always approachable and willing to offer advice.

Replaced mine at 72,000 miles. Bike was running fine but was new to me so I wanted to make sure everything was OK. Crank sprocket had some wear, the teeth were getting pointy so I replaced the bearing and sprocket. The parts came from Bobs BMW, the prices did not seem unreasonable and shipping was fast.

The bearing went on pretty easy, I heated it in a pan of oil on the grill. Got the oil (motor) hot to where it just started to smoke a little (like a cigarette). Let the bearing stay in the oil on the grill while I went back and chilled the shaft with a cheap auto AC recharge kit. Cut the fitting off of the hose and let the refrigerant slowly spray in the shaft until it was good and cold. The bearing went on with just a light tap on the center race with a brass hammer and bushing of the right size.

Do this in an old pan the cook will not miss and when she is not at home or you will have to listen to unpleasant music while you work.
