does anyone know of any after market silencers which might 'improve' the sound of my exhausts a little ? not used to such a quiet bike!

How much money do you want to spend?  There are some options out there.  One of our members in Manila even had a set custom made (and then repacked).

I've no experience with aftermarket stuff, but a search for "mufflers" might turn up some results.  You might be able to find some samples on Youtube as well.

If you want the bike louder I'm not sure "improve" is the right word.

Try http://staintune.com.au/

In my less than humble opinion, the Gold standard in BMW aftermarket exhaust systems.

And yes the stock mufflers on BMW airheads (to the extent I remember as it was all so long ago) sound very much like a fart in a bottle. Staintunes are not loud as such, but much more pleasant than stock.

Oh, and if the price seems a bit breathtaking, I assure you that they are a lifetime purchase. My R100RS has the Staintunes fitted in 1984 (the stock mufflers having excelled themselves in lasting from when I bought it in 1978). Wife's R65/80 got Staintunes around the same time.

My R65 rebuild kit has Staintunes purchased for it in 1989, either its then owner really wanted to spend money on it, or in its case the stock mufflers only lasted 4 years.

The critical thing is that all three Staintune systems are (at least from a functional perspective) as good as the day they were made.

Have a look at these:

http://www.armoursltd.co.uk/

I had a set of BSA style exhausts made for my R65, when it was a cafĂ© racer.  They are still on it.  Sounds great.

I have also sourced a cheap set of 'reverse cone megas' on the R100.  Again, all the noise you could wish for.

Make sure you insist they are legal for the road.  I did have to send a short set of mega's back, as they were not mot legal.

Cheaper, yes.  Same quality as the best stainless steel?  No.  But fun all the same.

They do a standard looking set for the R65 as well.

Cheers

Sito pattern silencers are substantially louder than the originals with a healthy bark under acceleration. I bought a nearly new set off ebay 5 years back and while they were very nicely made with good chrome I'm not a fan of too much louder so I fitted some extra baffles to tone them down. If loud is what you want though they should fit the bill.

The Sito's are nothing like as loud as open pipes they are just louder than the very quiet originals.

A65 sound might be a tall order as even if you were to put on A65 silencers it wouldn't necessarily sound the same due to differences in the engine characteristics like valve timing. I think I know what you mean though it's more about the tone of the sound than the actual noise level. My 75 Triumph Bonnie made a nice noise without being excessively loud.
