Sticking my neck out; If there is a single spark when the ignition is switched off I'll rule out the switches, coil and wiring. I'd be disconnecting the battery and removing the front cover. Water inside the bean can is my WAG preventing a pulse to the coil that triggers the field collapse in the coil that produces, well you know.

Hi All,

Well I've given it plenty of time to dry out now with the tank off and still no spark. I've stripped the ignition switch and cleaned out all the shite that was inside, but sadly still no spark. So next thing I'll do is take a look at this bean can I've heard so much about. I remember seeing a paragraph or two in the Haynes manual about testing it. I'll keep you posted.
BTW I have posted a picture of the old girl that I took last week in happier time before I washed it.

Great pic, but I can see why you washed it!   :)

This one is driving me crazy.

Crandall, have you checked to make sure the plug wires at the coil are pushed all the way into the coils and seated correctly?  And that your connection to the plug cap is good? How about the resistance of each plug wire, tip to tip with an Ohm Meter?

Just thought I would ask the ridiculous and obvious question before you tear into the bean can.

Hi Mike,

Yep, it's doing my head in too. I am assuming the plug leads and cap are ok as it sparks each time the ignition is switched on and off.

Ok all, I have found the problem. When I took the front engine cover off to take a look at the bean can, I discovered that that I had squashed the wire to the bean can. The sharp edge had cut it clean in half, I soldered the wires back together and it's now running. Thank you so much for all your help on this.

Best wishes
