Wiring the Acewell Speedometer/Tach

I just received the Acewell 2853 Spedometer/Tach and Speed Sensor for my  1982 R65. I have 8 wires coming out of the existing BMW speedometer. I have been able to match these wires up with some of the Acewell 2853 as follows:

I believe Acewell's Hazard Light (wire Light Blue) "may" not be applicable. The Fuel (wire Blue) is not applicable.  If anyone has
Installed the Acewell 2853 on their bike I would appreciate any
advice and help. Also, regarding the Speedometer cable. Is the existing cable simply "pulled" out of the engine and replaced withe the new cable (also obtained from Acewell) ?   Help. Thanks!

Hello !
Beware of the charging light. I guess the Acewell is made from a LED which won't give enough current to initiate charging. So either you replace the charging light by a resistor or you devise something to make the whole thing work as planned...
The clock power wire should go to a red wire on the original wiring. It is a +12V from battery. You'll find one on the ignition switch.

I don't see a specific "charge light" ( no wire dedicated ) on the Acewell Computer nor is one mentioned in their manual. There are charging system monitors available but the one I saw was $57 at aerostich...expensive! are there other options??

Tom. I send you a PM with a message I received from Barry when I was replacing my gauges that explains which wire needs to go where. It worked perfect for me first try.

As for the generator light Monte has a good right up in the FAQ/Procedures section. I installed it and have never had an issue.

The Acewell speedo cable replaces the stock BMW speedo cable from the transmission to the gauge. Just be careful with the bolt holding the transmission end in place. It is the battery ground, should have a hole through it for a vent and is very prone to stripping out the threads in the transmission.

So how do I connect the various lamps,etc. to the Acewell? Simply by connecting like dedicated lines? Of course, the Generator lamp is connected differently. Is it possible to get a diagram?
On another issue, the speed sensor and magnet areshown in the
manual, but there is no indication as to where to install the magnet (and thereby the sensor) Are they talking about installing it on the wheel...like they do on bicycles?? The RPM Sensor other end is show
connecting to the Ignition Coil or around the spark plug cable. That still raises the question as to where the sensor goes. ( I'm sorry I ever got this computer)

If the speed sensor is like the trailtech offerings then you are correct, it goes on the wheel.  Trailtech will give you a magnetic bolt (as well as a plain magnet you can adhere with epoxy) to replace one of the rotor bolts on your front brake.  The magnet should then move past the speed sensor, which is attached to the fork.

It's sometimes thought that the instrument warning lamps have a common earth. It's actually the other way around, the Green/Blue wire on pin 6 is the +12v common feed to those warning lamps which function by being seperately switched to earth. BTW it's not a permanent 12v feed but is activated by the ignition switch so it won't do for the clock power.

I've attached the clearest and highest quality wiring diagram that you will find anywhere together with a legend that I translated from the German one. It's for a 78 but the the part you are interested in is I believe the same.

Thanks for all the information, etc. I do have wiring diagrams in my Clymer and Haynes Manuals for the R65. Perhaps I'm asking the wrong question. I should ask if I can connect the existing BMW wires from the speedometer to theAcewell Speedometer provided I have like functions connected. The exception would be the Generator light.
The Acewell has LCD Generator lights, thus a direct connection would not give accurate results. If anyone has connected the Acewell to their R65 I would be interested in knowing what and how they did this.

As far as the speed sensor and magnet that is mentioned in the manual, that is the generic hookup method. Since you purchased the BMW specific speed sensor that mounts in the transmission you will not be using that. Your sensor/magnet are inside the plug that is inserted in the old speedometer hole in the transmission.
