Bean can compatibility ?
« on: July 25, 2013, 12:15:37 PM »
So I beleive my bean can has ceased to function- and I have found one off of a 1981-1983 r100 to purchase.. Are these interchangeable for an '83 r65?

I have no spark and so far everything else looks alright..

It's a lot cheaper than a new one.. But then again it is probably in the same state!

Half the summer is gone and I've had only two weeks of riding this bike... Now I'm just reading zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance and gaining some moral strength to start back up-

Thanks,
Noah

Noah, have you tried the "paper clip test" to confirm the hall sensor is or is not working?

Before you yank, toss and replace the "bean can" -formally known as the Ignition Trigger Unit, you need to confirm the the Ignition Control Unit (ICU) is functioning. The ICU lives under the fuel tank and is that black slab thingy attached to the heat sink.

1. First remove the NEG battery cable. Then remove the engine front cover. Unplug the 3-wire connector between the ICU and ITU  that's located under the front cover. Reconnect the NEG battery cable.

2. Straighten out a paper clip and stick one end into the center pin of the three wire connector coming from the ICU.

3. Remove one spark plug, reconnect the plug wire and secure the plug to the cylinder so that you have it grounded.

4. Turn on the ignition, touch the other end of the paper clip to any nearby ground and you should see a spark at the plug. If you get a spark, the ICU is good. Every time you ground the paper clip, you'll see a spark indicating the ICU is doing its job.

5. No spark? The problem is not likely to be the ITU/bean can.

6. Fix whatever problem is occurring "up stream" of the ITU, then deal with the trigger unit if necessary.

Easy test and all you lose is a perfectly good paper clip. Report back your findings.

Do you have a black and gray ignition coil ???

If you do, I would suggest testing the coil primary and secondary circuits for resistance/continuity .

It is a known problem with these bikes .

'82 R65 LS
'84 R65 LS
'87 Moto Guzzi V65 Lario
'02 R1150R
Riding all year long since 1993 .
I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!

The coil is all black and was actually just replaced for one giving a real weak spark-

After the test I got no spark whatsoever..
I think ill start reading snowbums electrical explanations so I can find out what is upstream and what might look suspect-

Thank you for the instructions!

This is the infamous Bosch Crack-O-Matic ignition coil. Confirm you either do or do not have this BMW OEM coil.

If you find this evil item under the fuel tank, remove it from it's mount, wipe it clean and check for minute cracks on the end -as was mine- or longitudinally. Even one tiny crack means it's toast. A Dyna "brown" coil is a favored plug n'play replacement.
Also, use a VOM to check the coil's primary and secondary circuits for resistance and continuity. Soecs are in your manual.

Turned out to be the ignition control unit- bought a replacement from Euromotoelectrics. Got spark right away! Also put on a new diode board and somewhere between those two the charge light actually goes off.. Hoorah!
