Rear light problem... advice please
« on: August 08, 2007, 02:08:03 AM »
Checking my bike over last night. (84 Model) I discovered the rear light was out. Changing the bulb did not fix the situation and as the instrument lights were out also I came to the conclusion that the a fuse had blown. Searching for the fuses was a challenge in itself and I believe that mine are inside the headlight cowling which are, as my bike has a full fairing, inaccessible without stripping the bike right down.
I took the bike to a BMW dealer this morning and let a mechanic loose on it. He came to the conclusion that the fault is on the front of the bike somewhere and would need a lot of time to investigate it. But was booked solid for two weeks. As he screwed the light back up the bulb came on but by the time I got home it was out again. So its not a fuse I now know that much.
Has anyone got any ideas? Thanks.
Dick

You most likely have a loose connection, or a corroded connection somewhere in the wiring harness. You mentioned that the instrument lighting was not working as well, that would lead me to believe that you have a ground or earth problem. Did the instrument lighting come back on when the rear light came on?

On my R100RT the tail light and instrument lamps are on the same fuse.  None of the R65 bikes have the fuses up in the headlight, AFAIK.

The fuses on my 1980 are on the RH side under the side cover in a plastic box .  There are two european style 8 amp fuses (white?)  I have replaced one with two mini blade fuses (The Green and Black wires) after I had problems with my brake lights last fall (loose spare green and black wire up in the steering head contacting ground/frame).  The ends of the fuses have a habit of corroding so get some fine sand paper and dust off the ends of the fuse and clean the contactors of the fuse holder.  Then start tracing and cleaning your grounds.  Use a little sand paper again and before you screw them back down, put some dielectric grease on 'em to keep the corrosion from coming back.

Good luck and a lot of persistance will cure this problem.
