Clutch Cable
« on: July 19, 2013, 03:26:49 PM »
I finally have received my new parts for the clutch cable etc.  One of the parts that is shown in the parts diagram for the Bowden cable is a feltring.  There was no feltring on my old cable.  What I don't know is where this feltring fits.  Does anyone know.

My bike is a 79 R65.

OK I just took a look at the cable again and I'm guessing that the feltring fits over the cable near the end where it enters the lever assemble.  Am I right?

Also should I put some lubricant on this feltring?

Don't recall see a felt ring anywhere on the clutch cable. The only felt ring I know of is on the clutch push rod and that depends on the year model.

It's part number 8 in the second diagram down.  Look here:

I did see that in the parts catalog. Never order one when replacing my cables.  Never saw  a felt ring when I replace my originial  cable on my 82 couple months ago. Even looked in the factory maintenance manual this did not show the felt. Also the parts catalog for my R90/6 does not show the felt ring with the cables like it does for the R65's.

Yes, there is one. It is at the handle lever. I don't recall if it's into the lever itself or in the bushing for the cable. But there is one. (at least it was here on my '82 R65 last year)

I have just replaced mine (79) with a featherlight cable, there was no felt ring on the new one and no felt ring on the old one which I believe to be the original, there may be different regional specs but as long as it it lubricated there should be no problem.

Lou where did you get the featherlight cable.  I have been buying my cables from the BMW dealer and they have been failing after a years use.  I checked everything that was posted on the board and found nothing wrong with how the lever etc works.  I'm thinking that maybe these BMW cables are not too strong.  Each time they have failed on the end cable fitting at the hand lever.  Perhaps a different make of cable might work better.

I use OEM BMW clutch cables and only had one fail on me, it failed at the swaged fitting at the clutch lever .

General consensus is to lubricate the cable end and the round barrel looknig part that it goes into at the clutch lever,  I guess if it isn't lubed it binds up an puts stress at the swaged fitting where the cable exits it .
