Parts above worked a miracle for me. List says 7/10/13 since I emailed the parts dept a moment ago and asked them to email me the invoice back. Parts were purchased in '09. You have to scroll this post to the right in order to get the price rundown. ../SO means "per side".
Does it also clunk whenever the forks are suddenly extended, as in hard acceleration as you mention, as well as sudden drops off of pavement cracks, potholes, low curbs? Yours may be something different, but this 'kit' is worth a try. When I purchased it it was referred to as an "anti-dive" kit. For that reason alone it may improve the bikes braking and handling. I'm not a sport rider so I did not notice much difference in that regard.
I chased this #u@ing demon clunk from '89, the year I bought the bike, to '09. Adjusted steering head bearings a dozen times at least, replaced those bearings, rebuilt the forks half a dozen times, replaced the rubber/urethane "bumpers". Thinking the clunk might be something else loose I rode with the brake caliper removed, with the gas tank removed, with the headlight removed, the front engine cover removed, etc, etc, to no avail. aaaaaaaggggghhhhhhhh!!!!
I had threads in four different forums to no avail. Got plenty of anecdotal confirmation of such "clunk" from about a quarter of all owners of R65, R80, R100 owners but no concrete advice.
Finally in 2009 Rusty at MaxBMW, noticed an "anti-dive" kit in the R65 fork assembly fiche. Said it was worth a try. It replaced the original single spring that retains the valve with two springs separated by a urethane bumper. Sent me an email of the fiche and I really had my doubts. I still can't understand intuitively why the original was clunking. I'd even visited it before with steel shims to hold it tighter in place.
The "kit" was absurdly cheap for BMW parts so I went ahead and ordered. Installed it upon arrival. Clunk disappeared.
I enjoy the bike 50 percent more I swear. That clunk used to just drive me INSANE ranging from mild clicking to a clunk that I could feel in the handlebars. God bless Rusty.
I called MaxBMW in New Hampshire just now to see if parts were still available and was told that there was no longer a "kit" listed. But here is the list of parts I purchased from them in 2009.
It's well worth a try for you. Good luck.
