New Muffler?

Well I have a decent size hole in my muffler where it attaches to the collector pipes. Anyone have a good suggestion for new mufflers? I see some used parts on Ebay, and the MAC whispertones. Anything else I should look at?

My '82 R65 runs with Keyhan stainless steel exhausts since the early 90's... (92 if I refer to the date stamped on them)
At the time I bought them, the 10 years warranty was a definite plus.
Now, they look like new, are like new and I'm still a very satisfied customer !

"Anything else I should look at?" If you like the stainless mufflers, you might be looking at your bank account.

I have stainless on my '81, Dunstall look-a-likes, and they are great. I was lucky and got a great deal on the used set. Perfect condition.

The '83 ended up with brand new chromed steel Dunstall repops. Also good.

I think the key to long muffler life is the avoidance of short rides that can allow condensation to form, possibly leading to internal rusting. Road salts can be hard on 'em, too, but we don't see those chemicals 'round these parts.

Verify condition of any used muffs you find on eBay. I thought I had found a pair of beauties but when I asked for photos of the undersides... rust all the way through the metal! No sale there.

I have a replacement set of chrome Sito silencers which I got 2nd hand of ebay. They looked to be hardly used and before fitting them I bunged up one end and poured in a good volume of waxoyl anti rust fluid then sloshed it around before draining the excess. That was 5 years ago and so far so good. I do a mix of longer runs and very short commutes which is bound to produce condensation especially in the winter.

Before shelling out for stainless silencers I would have to be 100% sure that they produced an exhaust note that I could live with. That's a tall order as you can't exactly test ride them then take them back.  

If the original Zuena's were available at sensible prices I'd buy a set and give them the same anti rust treat.

If you like an exhaust note that's a bit "throatier" than stock you will like the MAC mufflers.  I have them on both the Junkyard Dawg and my '81 R100.  If you like a quiet stock-like exhaust you should probably pass on 'em.

Stock Zuena mufflers on mine, you could just replace what you have for pretty cheap

Just a note here, the R65 had mufflers that were specific to the R65, the larger displacement bikes had different mufflers .

I believe the monoshock R65 has different mufflers than the twin shock R65's .

The twin shock R65 has a 38 mm diameter exhaust pipe and the larger bikes had a 40mm diameter exhaust .

Right side OEM mufflers for twin shock R65's are still available from Germany.  Left side mufflers are no longer available based on my search a couple of years ago.  The left side muffler has the much needed axle notch depression.

As a data point regarding the exhaust note of the Keihans ... they are as close as my "ringing" ears can tell to be as exact as the OEM's.

I installed a complete set of Keihan'$ on my R65.  Excellent quality, fitment, and hardware.
